Our waiter took exceptional care of my son. He gave us a GF menu and confirmed each dish as it came out. Our meal was delicious, delightful, and worry free.

EXCELLENT food and service. Suggest making a reservation if possible. We did not, and ate at the bar. The bartender was fabulous. Our son has Celiac, and he made sure to get him GF chips from their dedicated fryer. When our food came, the person bringing it looked confused when asked which was the GF plate, so he sent it back and got us another order quickly. I would definitely go back

I love Oyamel! They do such an amazing job with allergens and have a seperate menu. Staff is very knowledgeable. I just went (03/13/24) and was provided seperate tortilla chips fried in a seperate fryer & my own salsa to avoid cross-contamination! Highly recommend

They now have a dedicated gluten free fryer when I was there in February so we had chips and salsa. While their menu and GF options are extensive, I honestly thought their tacos were kind of boring. I loved the octopus though!

They have an allergen menu with GF marked. All of the tacos are made with blue corn tortillas (the Yucatán pork taco is so good!)
Their guacamole is made in house and delicious! The chips are not gluten free, but they will bring you some of the blue corn tortillas as a gf substitute if you ask.

GF menu. Waitress attentive to my son and asked if sensitivity or celiacs, since later told to avoid chips due to possible cross contamination. Food is great! Try the tamales!

Delicious food! Menu is clearly marked and server asked about allergies immediately. no dedicated fryer, so chips are out, but brought fresh warm tortillas. Dishes are small-ish. Had the enchiladas and order of refried beans (shareable size) and was full.

We had a great experience at Oyamel. There is a separate allergen menu for anyone with dietary restrictions and GF options are clearly marked. Staff was very knowledgeable about what items were safe from cross contact. We could not have the house made chips because of a shared fryer but they sent out fresh homemade soft corn tortillas for us to enjoy with our salsa. Great experience and delicious food.

Great meal! The menu lists all allergens next to each dish. There are a bunch of gluten free options. When our server came to the table the first thing he said after the welcome and introduction was to ask if anyone had any dietary restrictions or allergies. He was very helpful and attentive. All 5 people in our group loved their meal. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant if you’re in the mood for Mexican.

The food was super tasty.
Allergens clearly marked on a separate allergen menu.
They were aware of cross contact and waiter was able to advise me which things cannot be modified.
I wish I understood better how they were making things gluten-free. They remove things, such as sauces or garnishes, that have gluten in them. The food was super tasty, but I feel that things like those garnishes and sauces. Can sometimes add just a little extra pizzazz to a meal.
So just understand that going in.
Food was super tasty.
Chips were not safe.
The chocolate dessert with a coffee, ice cream was awesome!

Contaminated after discussing with seemingly knowledgeable waiter, ordering only items from the GF menu. Very disappointed because of the price and the fact that I picked this place based on the good reviews.

Ate at this place 9 years ago. It was amazing! Many items on the menu are gf and the staff is very knowledgeable about gf safety and also their ingredients. This was one of our favorite dining experiences in DC! Don’t miss the grasshopper tacos! They were quirky and delicious!

Fantastic cocktail list and food menu. Allergens are marked on the menu. I sat at the bar, and both of the bartenders who served me asked if I had any allergies. Most of the menu is already GF.

Sadly, the restaurant has a gluten-free menu but the chips are cooked in a shared fryer. That was extremely disappointing. My daughter was able to eat the chips but complained they were over cooked in the oil. The food is extremely overpriced. My bill came out to $70 for lunch for two and we only drank water. I ordered chicken enchiladas which came with no sides and was smothered in a thick cheese. I had to peel off the cheese to find a very small tortilla. It was not that good. I don’t plan on eating here again. Extremely underwhelmed.

It’s a nice restaurant but, even thought they have a menu with indications of allergic (as gluten), some of these dishes were not correct. We asked for meatballs (gluten free indicated in the menu), but the waiter told us this dish has gluten...

Great experience! Wonderful food! The server was really helpful and knowledgeable- when I booked I mentioned I had celiac and when we arrived the server brought an allergy menu (gluten free options were all clearly marked, lots of options to choose from). He brought out warm tortillas as the chips are cooked in a shared fryer, and talked me through items which might be cross contaminated. Great tacos and margaritas, and the restaurant itself was beautiful- cosy seating and bar area too.

Good! Keep in mind most dishes are tapas sized. Server brought me nice tray of sliced vegetables as chips are not gf! I have celiac. Got steak with cherry tomato salsa. No bad reactions. Also got delicious Jim’s with chopped pumpkin seeds. Recommended it all around.

Amazing experience here. Super knowledgeable staff. They brought out separate salsa, and since the chips are not gluten free, they brought me some tortillas to dip instead. I felt very safe eating here as someone with Celiac, and I’d definitely recommend it.

Server told me chips were gluten free when I explained I had celiac, then another server told me they were fried in the same fryer as gluten items. When I explained that I would be sick bc I had eaten the chips, they were rude, unapologetic, and defensive. Server was very standoffish and not understanding at all despite explaining the condition. I know other people have good experiences here and I’ve had great experiences at Jaleo (same owner) but was very frustrating with this experience AND got very sick. Will not return.

Great food and service! Our server was very knowledgeable. As soon as I said I had a gluten allergy, he informed me that the chips were cooked in a shared fryer. He offered to bring corn tortillas with the guacamole my table ordered. They also have a separate menu for gluten free items and those items aren’t cooked in/on shared surfaces. Most importantly, I didn’t get glutened! It was very noisy, so hard to have a conversation, but the food and service were great!
Yes
Separate allergy menu with lots of info, waiter was super knowledgeable and they brought me a separate plate of veggies and tortillas to eat with the salsa and guacamole because they don’t have a separate fryer.
Yes
Found this restaurant through the app and it was so delicious. Authentic Mexican cuisine and a color coded allergen menu. Celiac beware but if you use an enzyme pill you’ll be ok. I have a gluten sensitivity and had to take pills with the corn chips because of the shared fryer. My meal was allergen free and tasted amazing. Get the guacamole! It’s fresh made and awesome!
No
Our server was extremely knowledgeable and reassuring that they could handle GF and nut free. My GF son at 4 orders of fresh tortillas and had a taco, quesadilla and quest and loved every bit of it. They have an allergen menu that made ordering so easy.
Yes
Food was incredibly tasty (as leftovers too!), and the service was really fast. They don’t have a separate fryer, but they had good substitutes for many items - like tortilla chips - where cross contamination might be an issue. Staff were knowledgeable and responsive about Celiac restrictions, and our server made good recommendations and let us know which menu items we were considering posed cross contamination danger.
Yes
This used to be my favorite restaurant but last time I ate here I become very ill for days after-- likely due to cross contamination. Be careful with cross contamination!!
No
This place was amazing! An extensive GF menu, knowledge of CC before I said anything, and terrific non-GF stuff as well for non-Celiacs at the table. Just note the fryer is shared, so no GF tortilla chips. But my Celiac 10-YO daughter loved her tacos, the ceviche and the ice cream. Yum!
Yes
Fantastic service and very careful about gluten and cross-contamination. Can't wait to go back.
We had the Bistek, guacamole, chicken mole and all were delicious. The chips are cc so she brought me soft corn tortillas for my salsa. Best meal of the trip. It’s a tasting small plate menu so it can add up but it’s worth it. They also had a gf menu.
Yes
Staff is knowledgeable. They have a separate menu. Food is delicious!!!! Get the guacamole with veggies!!
Yes
Do not eat the chips they bring to your table! Do tell them you have a gluten allergy, and they will bring tortilla chips that have not been cross contaminated in their fryer. They have a menu for allergies, and the waitress knew what she was talking about. Highly recommend the happy hour.
Now my favorite Mexican restaurant! The chips aren’t guaranteed GF due to the fryer, but we had no issues. There were sooo many options and I could finally have some chicken enchiladas with white sauce.
Yes
Staff knowledgeable and food great and gluten free. Chips cross contaminated, but good

Tacos are delicious and staff is knowledgeable. Do not eat the chips, they are NOT gf safe but they will bring you tortillas which are safe and go great with the guacamole.
