This place was amazing! An extensive GF menu, knowledge of CC before I said anything, and terrific non-GF stuff as well for non-Celiacs at the table. Just note the fryer is shared, so no GF tortilla chips. But my Celiac 10-YO daughter loved her tacos, the ceviche and the ice cream. Yum!
We had the Bistek, guacamole, chicken mole and all were delicious. The chips are cc so she brought me soft corn tortillas for my salsa. Best meal of the trip. It’s a tasting small plate menu so it can add up but it’s worth it. They also had a gf menu.
Do not eat the chips they bring to your table! Do tell them you have a gluten allergy, and they will bring tortilla chips that have not been cross contaminated in their fryer. They have a menu for allergies, and the waitress knew what she was talking about. Highly recommend the happy hour.
Best Mexican Restaurant ever! Also best allergen friendly menu ever created. Every dish option is clearly identified with GVSND and when options available also identified. Every dish was truly amazing explosion of flavors. WOW ARRIVED IN FOOD HEAVEN!
I am not 100% confirmed celiac since I stopped eating grain so long before all the testing. I do have the genetic marker .And after my experience last week eating out I am pretty positive I am. That said I had a wonderful experience at Oyamel. The staff was also really helpful when ordering.
Make a reservations or call ahead, if possible. We were willing to wait an hour, but lucked out and got seated fairly quickly! Everything we had was fantastic...chips, salsa, guacamole and tacos (brisket, roasted chicken, BBQ, mushroom)! Will definitely come back next time we're in DC.
I got sick after eating here. The waiter asked me if I had Celiac or not. I told him I had an extreme gluten sensitivity and would get sick from cross contamination. He said that he alerted the chef and would make sure that I would not get cross contamination. I started getting sick before I even finished my meal. It was a busy Friday night and the server was not very attentive. I am not sure if it was the server, the chef or if this establishment just doesn't take you seriously unless you tell them that you have Celiac. ZERO STARS!
Visited in mid-December 2015. Contrary to an earlier review, the restaurant had no gluten-free menu. My companion and I are both vegetarian and dairy free as well as gluten-free. We told the waiter what our needs were, and he disappeared into the kitchen to talk to the chef. It took literally 20 minutes for him to return. Our options were, unsurprisingly, very limited, but the food was delicious.
Impressive allergen menu covering top allergens as well as gluten. Chips are not safe but there's so many other options that it's easy to forget that small disappointment. Love the festive atmosphere and that the tapas menu allows you to try multiple dishes in one meal. Visited in Nov. 2015. They have a dedicated gluten free menu with many many items on it. The restaurant is conveniently located near several metro stations. The food was ok, a bit greasy and bland. The service waa poor as the waiter never brought us a menu, he disappeared for 30 minutes when we needed our check and he simply was not friendly. I tried to make eye contact with a manager but they just kept eyes down and walked around.
Amazing!! Took our kids for lunch. Our server was so attentive and friendly. Kids loved the fresh pressed mango juice! We had a few tacos, lots of their homemade GF corn tortillas, some black bean soup and THE BEST tamales of our lives! Kids and hubby had guacamole and tortilla chips. Said they were excellent. Server was kind to inform me that because I was celiac, I should stay clear of tortilla chips due to cross contamination. No problem for me. Their warm corn tortillas were better than chips anyway! Writing this review several hours later and still feel great. This restaurant was a total home run for us.
Loved this restaurant! Extensive authentic Mexican food menu, with gluten free desert options as well. My quesadilla was delicious! Amazing atmosphere, guacamole made right in front of you, really fun place to eat. However, this restaurant is not really kid friendly. My 9 year old little brother didn't like how different the food was.
Oyamel has a great GF menu! They have tons of options and the kitchen staff is very well trained to avoid cross contamination. In my experiences there the entire staff was knowledgable. Things to avoid: 1. The chips are fried in contaminated oil but the staff is happy to sub corn tortillas for free! 2. The margaritas are not gluten free but can be made gluten free if you ask! 3. Ordering something you know is on the GF menu is not enough! You must inform your waiter because the kitchen staff makes changes to the cooking preparation when gluten free is requested
