They glutened me GOOD, this was definitely a stronger reaction than I get to accidental contamination. I mentioned specifically that I'm celiac, so this isn't a "lack of awareness" situation. Interesting that I had the Oakland Proposition chicken a bit before and it was fine. Judging by the reviews, something may be up with the one in SF. Really disappointed because the food was good and the promise of gluten free was so convincing.
I’m celiac and specified a severe allergy. I tested my food twice with the nima sensor and it came back positive for gluten. Unfortunately I made the mistake of trusting this place, but no matter what you say to them, you can’t be sure. The wings and fries tested positive even though they were labeled as gluten free.
Absolutely delicious! First time I've been able to have fried chicken in past 5 years since being diagnosed coeliac! Bread is nice too! Even the hand made cut chips are gorgeous! If you want to eat out cheap in San Francisco, this is the place to go to!
Gluten free fried chicken!!! Dedicated fryer so gluten fries too. My favorite is the salad, due to a really delicious baby kale, romaine, basil, mint mix. The staff is really knowledgeable about gluten free. Today they saved me from accidentally ordered malted mayo with my fries. I’ve eaten here dozens of times and never gotten sick, also it is delicious. They also do dairy-free and vegan.
Delicious! My non-Celiac boyfriend said my GF chicken tasted better than his regular. A little pricey, but decent portions. Spicy slaw is very spicy. Best GF bread I've had - it actually stretched when I tore a piece off! My only concern is that the GF plates don't look any different- could be easy to have a mix up on the kitchen. The waiter said it was the GF plate, but I felt like I had look at my bread to verify that it was GF (GF bread always looks different.)
GLUTEN-FREE FRIED CHICKEN. Boom!! But wait - there's more! GF buttermilk biscuits! GLUTEN-FREE FRENCH FRIES!! Cute small hip place - several solidly GF options, staff was v patient with our repeated questions ("this is GF? Really? How about the fries? They're GF too?!"). Some seating but not tons. We are super-happy to have such a great GF option available! K2 said, "this is my new favorite restaurant!":)
This place rocks. I ordered the gluten free fried chicken with salad and a side of fries. I highly recommend trying the sweet habanero sauce on your fried chicken. It's amazing. Just the right amount of sweet and spicy. They use dedicated friers for the gluten free fried chicken *and* the fries. I've eaten here twice now and not had any issues whatsoever. Both the person taking my order and the server who brought me my food from the kitchen confirmed that it was gluten free. The second time I went in I met the owner and we had a good chat. He mentioned that when they were starting out they tried all kinds of different batters and he actually prefers the gluten free version. It was so good and it just happened to be gluten free. He mentioned having a friend who is Celiac as well. I didn't ask about gluten free bread or biscuits so can't speak to that.
So that review is kind of hard for me since I felt confident eating there and the staff was helping me to choose whats good for me. The food was amazing I think I had never something that good before and especially the bun was awesome BUT I got really sick after eating there and can not really explain why since everything felt safe to me! so I would say if someone is gluten free as a lifestyle give it a try but for people like me as sensitive celiac I would not go there again!
"We're not one of those fake gluten free places," said our server when we asked about the fryers and GF options. With that we were put at ease and ready for the amazing food that followed. This place is the real deal: dedicated fryers, home made everything and free range chicken - nuff said. If you're a celiac, this is a must try. We had the fried chicken entree (with gluten free biscuit), chicken strips and potato wedges; wish we had room for more.
As a Southerner, and a guy with Celiac disease, I thought fried chicken was over for me. However, these people have it down! Most all the menu can be made gluten free and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about ingredients! I ate there with zero issues. I ordered fried chicken strips and fries. The gluten free "breading" on the chicken was delicious and crispy!
Omg, this place totally changed my attitude toward GF restaurant eating in SF. Until I found Proposition Chicken, my strict celiac diet had me sweating at the very thought of trying out a new restaurant, and I thought I'd just never be able to eat anything really delicious ever again. What a horrible way to live! Thankfully, those days are gone. Proposition Chicken has a dedicated GF fryer and their GF buns are awesome and fresh out of the oven. The GF buns are so good that, recently, when there was a mix up in our takeout order, my seven year old daughter was heartbroken that her sandwich came on a wheat bun (she is not celiac)! And...GF fried chicken sandwiches...need I say more??? There's only a few options on the menu but they are masters of the fried chicken craft. An added bonus is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of turnover with the employees, and the friendly counter people almost always remember the particulars about my standard order, so it's nice to see a familiar face and not feel like I'm being fussy. Plus , the lack of turnover indicates that the owner treats his employees well and pays them a fair wage, which is important to me.
This is my favorite place for a snack just after work but before dinner. The chicken strips are incredible. Everything on the menu can be made gluten-free! If you get the fries ask for them with regular mayo, as the malted mayo isn't gluten-free.
