Awesome place, dedicated gluten free, do not charge extra for toppings on sandwiches, even avocado! Not super expensive either
Iced coffee had coffee ice cubes which I thought was cool
Yes it is connected to a church but had a welcoming atmosphere, non gendered bathroom, very cool rooftop seating area. 🙂🙂
The food is great and so nice to have everything gluten free! However if you aren’t comfortable with being in a heavily Christian religious environment it may not be the best place for you - as it was uncomfortable for me. We didn’t realize it was tied to the ministries next door & they were selling Christian/religious books in the cafe. Like I said great food - but definitely felt uncomfortable as a someone who has not had the best experience in overtly religious businesses.
I love the chicken bacon ranch panini, and literally every other thing I’ve tried from roots cafe. They are a fully gluten free facility. Last I knew they served canyon bakehouse bread and bagels. They also have lots of baked goods like scones, cookies, and cupcakes. It’s a must stop for anyone who is gluten free!!
This place was awesome! It’s surprisingly large and was very busy. It also sounds like people who aren’t gluten free just go to this cafe because it’s good, which is awesome! We tried a breakfast sandwich, the veggie quiche, avocado toast, and then we each had a dessert crepe. Everything was delicious, but the crepes were a standout. My boyfriend and I think that was probably the best crepes we’ve found (and we love crepes, so we attempt to find a gf option each place we travel). As we were leaving, I decided to try a cupcake. It tasted great, had a pretty good texture, but did lack structural integrity. That said, it wasn’t dry at all and the frosting was absolutely delicious, so I will definitely be trying more of their baked goods next time I visit Portland. They also sell their day old baked goods for half off which is awesome!
Additionally, since this place is a little outside of Portland, we found it to be much more affordable than many of the places in the city. The cupcakes, for example, are $2.99, avocado toast was $3.50, a breakfast sandwich was $10 rather than $13 (or $15 with a gf bread up charge), etc. Overall, we really enjoyed this place and would definitely go back!
Update: I went back for another crepe and tried one of their cookies. Not bad, but a little grainy and kind of dry. I would definitely recommend the cupcakes over the cookies.
What a gem! Dedicated GF, with a pretty substantial lunch and breakfast menu. The bacon, egg, and cheese crepe was huge and very filling. The latte was probably the best I've ever had. The foam was thick -- the kind you dream about where the sugar sits on top. It was delicious!
The interior is clean, modern, and very pleasant. Staff were welcoming, warm, kind, and very hard working. A really great vibe here!
This is the type of place that, if you're lucky enough to live nearby, will become your regular place. (I'm jealous if you like close by!) Definitely on our list of favorites now. Stop by!
So happy to find this place while visiting Portland. Kids were thrilled to be able to choose anything on the menu. Our group had grilled cheese, Nutella crepes, avocado toast, tomato red pepper soup, a chicken sandwich, and a couple smoothie drinks- all was fresh and tasty. We also got a couple cupcakes and muffins to go. Outdoor & indoor seating.
Great atmosphere. EVERYTHING is gluten free. Most of the baked goods have dairy but sandwiches, meals, smoothies and other drinks have dairy free options. Staff was super friendly and cross checked for my dairy allergy without me even asking. Sandwich and smoothie was delicious. Will be returning!
A Celiac dream come true!! Wow - the fact that this place is 100% gluten free is such a relief! Although I also have Lactose Intolerance, which was a bummer for me considering all of their baked goods contain dairy. All that said, the sandwich I had was AMAZING!!! Absolutely delicious.
Everything is gluten free, which is really nice! They also don’t let employees bring in things with gluten and understand that there can’t be cross contamination. My brother wanted his food without the cheese, which was just a preference, but the person taking his order checked if it was an allergy, which makes me feel like the people there are aware of other allergies too. They are very kind and understand about celiac. The restaurant has a nice feel, with books you can borrow, nice staff, and outdoor seating. I went there twice and have tried the Strawberry Fields salad, Morning Maple Bacon, chocolate chip cookie, chocolate sugar donut, and tropical smoothie. All of it was delicious! It was really nice to be able to go to a place that was dedicated gluten free with lots of yummy food and really nice staff! I wish there was another location of Roots closer to where I live!
This place was delicious and so nice. They helped guide us through the menu for what is dairy free and EVERYTHING Is Gluten free. We even bought snacks for the road!
