I ordered from here via door dash. The sandwich was amazing- however I don’t think it was gluten free. It tasted too good to be true- if you have celiac disease, you know what I mean. I have been sick for four days and had to go to urgent care for zofran. If you have celiac disease, I recommend going into the store and asking questions.
GF pizza is celiac safe. So far every Schlotzky’s location where I have eaten takes great pains to ensure no cross contamination, and many have an open kitchen where you can watch them stop and clean everything and use separate dishes, etc for the GF pizza. Crust is always dense, but it’s fine. Have not tried the GF bun.
Hubby eats here often. Staff changes gloves, separate work station and when taking to go they place his order in a separate bag. It's UDIs bread so not the good ol Schlotzskys bread, but it gives him taste that is similar to what he remembers.
If you tell them you are celiac, they will do their best for you but know that everything goes though the same convection oven and wheat bread is made readily from scratch. Again, that being said the staff is knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and they go out of their way to create the safest, tastiest GF food for you. Udi's buns and pizza with Schlotzskys fresh recipes and ingredients makes my day happier.
Staff knows to do glove changes for GF. And the bread is great! They will do sandwiches or GF pizza . a little more training for staff would be good. I saw them use contaminated gloves to get the apple slices out of the bin and I mentioned it and the manager said he would go over it with them
I called the Mt. Pleasant store to ask if the GF bread had eggs in it. (I also have an egg allergy.) The guy who answered said, “I have no idea.” I waited for him to say something else, but he didn’t. I said, “Are you able to check?” He wasn’t willing. So, it’s obvious they don’t want to serve people with food allergies.
Rating all 5 stars because the service and the food was great. They stated they take precautions to avoid cross contamination with gluten, but it is a sandwich shop after all. My celiac daughter did not have gluten reaction with her gluten free pizza crust. They also offer gluten free breads. Overall great experience. Just make sure to make your gluten needs known when ordering
Ate here with no reaction. They even served my sandwich with a plastic knife so I could cut it myself. They use Udi's buns which are a bit thick but they tasted good and held up to the toppings and meat of The Original sandwich.
Love this restaurant! The owner is there most of the time and he’s the one that’s made my sandwiches/pizzas anytime I’ve eaten here. The food is delicious and they use Udi’s bread. ***Edited to add: they told me they don’t feel completely comfortable serving me since they can’t be 100% certain that they’re safe for celiacs. I haven’t been back since my conversation with the owner.
I had to deduct a star because although they have GF buns and pizza crust, the pizza is baked in the conveyer belt style oven, on a shared surface with gluten pizza. The young man at the counter told me the only Celiac safe option, was the roll which is prepared on a safe surface.
*non-celiac consumer here* Today I had the pizza and a pastrami sandwich with Udi’s crust & bun. Pizza was good but very basic (you can get better GF pizzas out there but this would suffice if in a hurry or not other places nearby). The bun though....... so far this is the most like regular bread I have had... I was thinking, are you sure this is GF?! Super delish! They have GF pizza crusts, buns, garlic breadsticks & chips
I’ve been having Schlotzsky’s GF Original Deluxe ever since they started using Udi’s. The first couple of times I would ask if they were sure it was GF before I ate it, because it looked so good. One time, I did take out and I called back to be sure it was GF, again it looked so good, each time the manager assured me my sandwich was GF. She also said they change their gloves and do not cut the GF sandwiches so as not to cross contaminate with the knife. What makes this so good is they toast the cheese on the bun just the same as the original Schlotzsky’s sandwiches, I can’t tell the difference. I have eaten Schlotzsky’s ever since they opened in the Dallas area and before when they were only in Austin. The staff is always friendly and the manager will generally come around to check on the customers. I have also eaten GF Schlotzsky’s at other locations, however this Forney location is the best! They know how to do a Schlotzsky’s Original Deluxe GF right!! Thank You!!!
They had gluten free buns but kind of acted like “You have Celiac so what would you like us to do about it?” I for sure did not feel safe eating there because they really did not seem to care and acted like it was annoying that I was asking about them changing their gloves, etc. Plus they were not knowledgeable about the condiments. When I asked about the Ranch dressing, the response was “I don’t know”.
I believe the owners of Gilmer and Mount Pleasant opened this Kilgore location. This one also has GF options. I thought it was important to put this on here because I don't see any Kilgore GF options listed at all. Surely there has to be some Celiac or GF people in the Kilgore area. Do your part and help others that live there or may be visiting the area and in need of the information you have. Just like I said in my Gilmer review, I have never spoken to the restaurant about their practices when it comes to preparing the food, so you may want to call and check first if that is something you need to know before eating there. One item I have enjoyed recently is their tomato soup. I give the crackers to someone else, but I can eat it with some GF crackers I buy somewhere else. Schlotzsky's website was revamped this year and they have not responded to e-mail requests as to where you can find their GF information or the 'Allergen Scorecard button.'
So great! Without prompting, staff is trained to keep gf food separate, change gloves, don't use the contaminated knife, etc. Very impressed! The Udi bun was pretty good, though thicker than the standard sourdough bun.
