A longtime refuge -- gone.

Since the Fall of 2011, ShopHouse has served as a trusted second-kitchen, a refuge, for so many sufferers of Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivities. ShopHouse was always there when I found myself getting home late from work and no desire to cook or opening the fridge with no food to cook. The menu was not only safe, but good. Really, really good.

This summer, ShopHouse released a line of spring rolls, which contain gluten -- ShopHouse's first gluten-containing menu item. These items are handled by the same gloves, same serving canisters, and same utensils as the rest of the otherwise gluten-free menu. Even worse, the spring rolls are displayed on the line with all of their otherwise safe menu items. The staff, nor management have not received any training to help them understand how to safely handle gluten within the restaurant, greatly increasing the chance of cross-contamination. ShopHouse is no longer that confidently safe refuge for the many Celiac Disease sufferers throughout the Greater Washington area.
