Edited to add: let them know you are celiac before you sit down. They will double wash the griddle and spatula. Had another good meal August 2019. Our server Faith, was very knowledgeable. I did Nima test pancakes in Dec 2017; came back gf. They provide a gluten-free/vegan batter. You make your own pancakes on a griddle in the middle of the table. My kids were in heaven. Gf batter made w soy milk but rice milk can be requested. Talked to the manager and felt very comfortable with their ingredients and practices.
This place looked awesome and had friendly staff! They explained to me that their gluten free pancakes were cooked on the same pan as their regular ones. I am Celiac but took the risk because I wanted to try them. I’m not that sick from them but I will say that overall it wasn’t worth it. The pancakes were dry and butter and syrup didn’t help much. If you are celiac I don’t recommend the pancakes as they were not good enough to get sick from...lol. Im sure they have other options such as eggs though. Looked like a wonderful place for non-Celiacs. Better to be safe than get sick from bad food.
Breakfast place where you can make your own pancakes at the table. (We were told this was the safest way to go as they griddle was sanitized after each use) They have GF / vegan batter that was delicious & the consistency was as a "normal" pancake. You can order toppings too (I did the lemon curd & blueberries - yum!) Bacon with macadamia nuts was delicious! Our server (Matt) was not very attentive but others seemed to be.
Like others said, very long wait time, yet open tables. Celiac son ordered the GF batter mix and made his own at our table (the rest of us ordered from the kitchen). Griddles get sanitized between customers. Waitress was brand new, but very educated on the GF menu, so GF is obviously included in training. Overall, a good experience and no reactions.
We had a really horrible experience here. I saw they came pretty highly recommended for gluten free breakfast so we thought we'd give it a try! We went in and they told us it was a 40 minute wait for 2 (not sure if they take reservations but if they do I advise you make them)! They mentioned we could eat at the bar if there was an open spot and luckily there was! The waitress gave me a gluten free menu but then proceeded to tell me nothing was really gluten free because as she put it "flour is literally flying around all over the kitchen". I was super disappointed but also thankful she was honest. My hubby was hungry so we stayed. I had plain yogurt and honey. Upon waiting for our food we noticed there were at least 5 to 7 tables open including one right behind us (not part of the bar). They were open the entire time we were there yet there were tons of people waiting to be seated and had we not found a seat at the bar, we'd have still been waiting when we left even though there were so many open tables in the restaurant. Normally I'd chalk this up as maybe they got unexpectedly busy and didn't have the adequate number of staff to wait every table but we were there 2 days prior but ended up not eating due to the long wait and one of the girls in our party went in and said she didn't know why so many people were waiting and that there were tons of open tables so with this happening again the second time, I'm assuming that's how they run things. Moral to the story, if you're celiac don't eat here and if you can't make a reservation don't eat here.
We went here 3 times during our Maui trip in May 2017 for breakfast. I had the Seasonal Vegetable Scramble (without the toast) twice. The portions were HUGE. Fantastic greens with beets. I also ordered the small stack of GF/Vegan pancakes (before realizing how large the portions would be). It was 3 large fluffy pancakes. For GF pancakes I thought they were pretty darn good - even my husband thought so and he can eat anything. I used the coconut syrup which was good. We went early in the morning before it was busy so perhaps that helped. (We did not make them at the table). They were pretty knowledge about specialized requests. They do not have GF bread which was surprising and disappointing. They had good green tea.
Waiter didn't know what gluten free really meant and insisted that the deep-fried potatoes that were fried with battered items would be OK. Gluten free pancakes were not edible. Worst pancakes ever. Not that many decent gluten free items. Ended up with scrambled eggs and rice. We were charged ala carte for everything. Left hungry and $40 gone.
NOT SAFE FOR CELIACS!!!!!!!! We've eaten at Slappy Cakes in Portland with no problems, so we were excited to find this location on our vacation in Maui for our celiac twins' birthday breakfast. As usual, we had them double-sanitize the griddle, talked to kitchen staff, ordered from the gluten-free menu. Three hours later, both kids are throwing up (their normal gluten reaction). To be fair, they do warn that they aren't a gluten-free kitchen...but very few places are and they did say they take precautions. The kids had the BEST time and loved the food, so it's very sad that they are so sick. Please avoid if you're celiac.
I have always loved Slappy Cakes and my experience this morning was terrible. Our waiter was a jerk/know-it-all. He served my mom cold eggs and bacon then said the kitchen was slammed but he just talked with the table next to us. He didn't even refill the water 💧 😔. He forgot to check on us and dropped our food while singing a song. He told us what we liked like he knew, and told my sister to eat less chocolate. I am so happy to have waited 45 minutes to be treated so poorly 💩, NOT. Avoid the waiter Danny.
One of fav meals on Maii! Fun, safe, and delicious. There is literally nothing more anyone could ask for! (Don't forget to try the savory options in your pancakes -- we LOVED the corn and cheddar!) And they were so sweet about double-sanitizing our griddle to MAKE SURE it was 100% gf. The best!!!
OMG this is unreal. You can either have GF pancakes made for you by the kitchen or you can cook them yourself on the griddle at your table. You can add a la cart toppings to your pancakes too. Such a great breakfast. The bacon was thick and perfect. Go early. We did but when we left there was a huge mob outside waiting for tables. Worth the wait though.
Went here twice during our five day stay in Maui. Both times I got the gf blueberry white chocolate chip pancakes and they were heavenly!!! I also enjoyed their eggs and white rice. Their potatoes are fried in a shared fryer so I stayed away from those but super knowledgable and super delicious!
The food was pretty good, but the server didn't even seem to know what gluten was. He recommended a couple items that had gluten. He seemed annoyed that we even asked about gluten free. Was friendly to other tables though. They do have a gluten free menu/guide, and a sheet with all of the ingredients in their batters.
