Coeliac Friendly to me! I visited last night with friends here. I'm a kiwi (NZ) so was a little overwhelmed to begin with. Was given a list of goods on the menu that were GF. Had a lovely meal with no after effects. (was a little worried about cross contamination possibilities)Would definitely visit again. Thank you.
First, we are not from here...so I was expecting more of a Jason's Deli vibe...this is a massive buffet with a very long salad bar, soups, potatoes, pastas,and baked goods. Buffet and Celiac sets off bells for me, not the good kind. There is all sorts of XC going on here. Croutons next to sunflower seeds, dressings in back of and dripping into other dressings, soups and shared spoons. In their favor, its all labeled "gluten friendly" (not to digress, but it should be gluten UNfriendly, or UNgluten friendly). I did okay...so they must be doing something okay. I did stay away from the cheese that had an oyster cracker in it...and anything close to questionable ingredients. So....not SUPER satisfying...but I got to make my plate, versus whatever mysterious thing that happens to my food in a kitchen. Also, one other complaint...out of 8 soups, only the chili was GF. What are you doing to the tomato basil? Or even the clam chowder?
Pros: They have a lot of options in the salad bar that are naturally gluten free and keep everything organized and clean. They al2ays have "gluten friendly" soup and bread options as well as a potato bar. Cons: They label items with no gluten containing ingredients "gluten friendly" not gluten free and have a disclaimer about possible cross contamination. Bottom line: There are options that are tasty and I have never gotten sick there but I am non-Celiac gluten sensitive.
There is a lot of potential for cross contamination. The gluten free pasta is right next to the regular pasta (and one regular pasta piece was in it). People touch the tongs to food on their plate that has gluten etc. I stick to the items before the pasta and a baked potato and a gluten free soup - and I've been ok!
Staff at this location is very knowledgeable and friendly regarding dietary concerns. Although I have several friends with celiac who have eaten here without any issues, I am going to say it is not celiac friendly because the corporate policy states that they only serve gluten-friendly items made in a non-gf kitchen. GF items clearly marked in all areas of this buffet-style restaurant with new gluten free options every two weeks. They have a Fresh Ideas blog to keep consumers informed about what will be available. Some of my favorites have been gluten-free lemon cupcakes, gluten free french bread, and gluten free cookies. Delicious!
They have a brochure or pamphlet with nutritional information. You just have to ask for it.. Some locations know exactly what you talking about and others may not. (At least in my experience). I now know the items I can have and my "go to" items. The ranch is GF! That was surprising to me but made me a happy camper. ;) They are doing more to cater to GF. Of course if you are ultra sensitive and have celiac there is going to be possibility with cross contamination but that's the gamble with dining out unfortunately.
This was always a go-to place for my family, but in the past few months they have become so much more gluten friendly. They have recently labeled all of their food items, including salad dressings, so it is very clear which ones are gluten free. For the first time, 1 of the 3 pre-made salads are gluten-free, and I am hoping this continues to be the case. The chili is currently the only soup that is gluten free; however, i appreciate that they now have a gluten free muffin on the permanent menu it seems, and they are actually really good!! My husband and kids, who aren't gluten intolerant, love the gf muffins too!
There was only 1 soup that was gluten free, the chili. The muffins that were labeled gluten-friendly were in fact gluten filled muffins. There were oats on the top and when we inquired to make sure the IATA they were using gluten free, the staff said they were not oats but chia seeds. There's a big difference between oats and chia seeds. There's is a real nice salad buffet offering and a make your own baked potato area.
GF ranch!!!!! Yum! Best ever! They will totally tell you every ingredient if you ask. Super fresh every time. I gave been going since I was little and have never been disappointed.
This location is completely oblivious to what GF even means/is. If it wasn't for the corporate website having which monthly specials are gluten free, I usually would have to ask them for the ingredients list for everything bc no one knows off the top of their heads which items are GF. And on top of all of that, they can impatient/weird when u ask for the ingredients or allergy information. I usually have chili and lots of salad (obviously since it's a hug salad bar). Luckily I can have the frozen yogurt dessert! But it's a tease when they walk around giving fresh baked cookies and you can't have it :/
Souplantation is my family's favorite restaurant. For the price you can't beat the variety and quality. However, I REALLY would like to see them add more GF items. They've made some additions recently and all of their salad dressings are GF, but usually most of the soups are not, and you can never go near the pasta, pizza, or bread items. There's still enough there to make a full meal but it gets kind of old getting the same things every time- salad, chili, potato...
After talking with a manager here to clarify if there is gluten free items I was told their chili was gluten free. What he failed to mention is it has no gluten free ingredients and that they don't follow the cross contamination protocols. So technically this place is not gluten free.
Soup menu rotates monthly. Check online for this months options. Extensive soup variety, loaded salad bar, baked potato bar and GF soft serve frozen yogurt. Chocolate sauce and Carmel sauce also GF!
Souplantation is a great place to eat for healthy options! BUT if you're GF you're navigating it blindly. Their salad bar has high cross contamination possibility. And their "fun" foods (after the salad bar) are not labeled to know if things are safe to eat (GF).
