I made it clear I am extremely gluten intolerant and the waitress said she wrote it down, but rolled her eyes and wrote nothing. My plate came out with a biscuit on the plate. I let them know I needed a new plate because I get a moderate to severe reaction with minor contamination. They took the plate and said that they remade it. I began having a reaction within 3 hours, so they were apparently still not careful. I ate here last year and had a great experience. I won’t go back.
Great food. Nothing marked on menu for GF, so talked with waitress and confirmed with manager. They have GF bread and buns and can make most things GF and prepare on a separate surface. The fries are GF and prepared in a dedicated fryer. Great service and atmosphere. Surcharge for using a credit card. Definitely going back.
Summary: not safe
1 they brought my burger out plated with the fries, even though I asked him not to
2 the kitchen staff seemed confused about what was considered gluten free
3 the waitress later told me that the fries were gluten-free because she marked my order with “gluten free” although she could not answer me if they had a dedicated gluten-free fryer that fried nothing else but french fries when I asked her that question.
I told the waitress I couldn’t have any wheat. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger on a gluten free bun, with the fries on a separate plate so I could give them to my son, and a side salad with no croutons.
A kitchen employees brought my burger on the same plate as the fries, with the fries all around and touching my bun, and no salad. I told her that I’d told the waitress that I couldn’t have the fries on the sane plate because I have to eat gluten free. The kitchen staff seemed confused on whether or not that meant she needed to make a whole new burger. I told her that I would need a new burger and bun and I needed my salad, and apologized for the inconvenience.
The waitress came out and apologized. She asked if they made it wrong and I said yes. She said that she put it in as gluten-free so they should’ve known.
they later brought me my hopefully remade burger, and a side salad. They did not bring the fly fries on a separate plate so that my kids could eat them, even though I had to pay for them, like I originally asked. At this point, I was done with dealing with it so I didn’t even ask for more fries.
They seem to be a bit disconnect between the waitresses in the kitchen staff and what was actually gluten-free, and what wasn’t.
Previous restaurant goers have advised that their fries have not been gluten-free, and, based on my experience , I did not feel comfortable eating there at all anymore.
My family, that does not have to eat, gluten-free, did enjoy their meal, and said that their shakes really good.
There is another restaurant that has delicious burgers with gluten-free buns, that I had much better experience, just a block away.
I will not be ordering food from Sunlight again.
Sunliner Diner took us on an enchanting journey back to the '50s with its charming retro-themed ambiance and an amazing staff that made the entire dining experience enjoyable and memorable. Their exceptional service was like a cherry on top of an already delectable sundae.
Their consideration for diverse dietary needs is commendable. Although there is no dedicated gluten-free menu, they do offer a decent range of gluten-free (GF) alternatives. The GF bun is deserving of special mention. It was light, fluffy, and tasted great with the generously portioned burger, which was so large that half of it was more than enough for a single sitting - making for a great meal to look forward to later.
My husband tried their Sunliner Burger and gave it two thumbs up. The balance of textures and flavors was perfect, making it a treat to the taste buds. The real star of his meal, however, were the onion rings. With a perfect crunch and well-seasoned batter, they were simply fantastic.
For those with a gluten intolerance, it's worth noting that the fries at Sunliner Diner are not gluten-free. On the other hand, they have other gluten-free side options including coleslaw, green beans, a side salad, and mashed potatoes. Although I didn't try the coleslaw, green beans, and salad, it's good to know that these options are available for those in need of GF alternatives.
As for the mashed potatoes, I can confirm that they are gluten-free when served without gravy. They were just okay, but a welcome option for those steering clear of gluten.
All in all, Sunliner Diner beautifully merges the nostalgia of a bygone era with the modern necessity of catering to various dietary preferences. Despite the lack of a dedicated gluten-free menu, they score high on making available a handful of gluten-free choices. The meal portions are generous, and the culinary experience is quite satisfying. This place is a must-visit, just remember to come hungry and make sure you don't miss out on their incredible onion rings!
