I went in today. They have a shared GF & non-GF flattop for the French toast and pancakes. They do not have a dedicated GF waffle maker. The only things we felt comfortable getting were eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries, an omelet, and fruit. The eggs/omelet/meat are cooked on a separate part of the flattop, away from the gluten food.
What we got was really good though!
Skip the gluten-free bread and pancakes and stick to traditional fair like omelets and corned beef hash
We recently moved to Virginia Beach and since I keep house all week (cooking/cleaning) my boyfriend likes to treat me on the weekends. As a result, we have been checking out the local restaurants. I am a foodie (and chef) that has been GF long before it was "cool". Ya know, before most of you had ever heard of gluten (back in the 90s). Just trying to preface in case you are looking for suggestions, I suggest clicking on my name and reading my reviews.
I was in the mood for pancakes this morning, so we didn't go back to Commune (😋). The wait was shorter than anticipated. Our waitress, Cassie, appeared quickly and was both friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered corn beef hash, scrambled eggs, GF toast with grape jelly, and a side of gf pancakes. P ordered some sort of omlette that came with pancakes and a coffee.
Once again the toast came out dry. 🤔 Idky they don't butter toast here in VA. 🤷🏻♀ Cassie quickly brought me some butter and I was able to try the toast. White bread, tasted pretty stale. Hard, thick, not for me. Next I went for the corned beef hash. The corned beef was very tasty but I was a bit disappointed that there was only a few shavings of potato no onion and no peppers. Still, the beef was good and went well with my scrambled eggs. 😋 The gf pancakes.... while they were far superior to the awful cornbread ones at the last pancake house, still left much to be desired. Think biscuits. They could have used some gravy instead of the maple flavored cornsyrup on the table. Beware of the syrup dispenser. It requires two hands to pour and comes out FAST. My boyfriend's syrup quickly flowed onto the table. 🤣
Peter's non gf food was good. The coffee was strong just the way he likes it. 👍
Overall, maybe skip the gf bread/pancakes and get something else. We liked that the portions weren't massive too. Enough food to satisfy yet didn't leave us feeling stuffed and wanting to do nothing else.
The food was very good and they are very willing to work with you and your allergies. The server even went back and checked with the chef when I asked questions she didn’t know the answer to. And when they weren’t sure, they didn’t try to make it up, they simply said they weren’t sure so they would t recommend it( asked if the turkey burger had gluten in, they tried to find the box and could t so said to be safe don’t order it)
There are some great reviews about this place but I was completely unimpressed. Their gluten free selection is nice but I prefer the pancakes I make from a boxed mix at home. The toast was tough like it was in the freezer too long and the waffle was alright. So far it seems safe but the staff was loud and the place smelled a little. I won’t be returning.
We went here for breakfast. The waitress was knowledgeable and told us that they did not use a different griddle or waffle maker. I did get the gluten free toast. And I didn’t get sick. But they were busy and gave me the omelet I ordered with cheese even though I asked for it without. The food was good. But I left disappointed because I was really wanting a waffle.
Very knowledgeable and willing to look at ingredients list for verification. The pancakes and waffles were amazing. Great for gluten intolerance issues.
I do not have celiac but I am very gluten intolerant. I have eaten pancakes with a side of bacon at this restaurant twice. They were great both times. I can understand why there would be cross contamination but I believe this is a great restaurant for people who are gluten intolerant
we picked here because they said they had gluten free and we were told they would clean the pans before they cooked mine and my sons food, they didn't so we got sick. when we told the host what happen she just said oh.
I specifically asked and was told they do not have dedicated griddle space, waffle maker or toaster so it really is NOT gluten free. Spoke to the girl who works there who is gluten intolerant and she told me this and that she doesn't always eat gluten free. Needless to say, I did not eat here.
They didn't have a separate Gluten free menu but included gluten free options on their regular menu such as gluten free pancakes, waffles, and Udi's bread for sandwiches or toast.
