Got sick after eating here.
I have celiac and saw many gluten free options on the menu. Right off the bat, the Baba ganoush with pita appetizer was mislabeled as gluten free on the dine in menu. Spoke to a server and was met by a condescending tone that I'm not the first gluten free person to dine here and they make everything separately. He confidently told me the curries are all safe, but when I was about to order one, I decided to ask a few more questions. Turns out the kofta in the curry is fried in the same fryer as samosas and other gluten items. This makes it unsafe for celiacs and those with severe gluten allergies. This restaurant should be putting a disclaimer that the fryer is shared (and maybe list items as gluten friendly, not gluten free). They should also be educating their servers about what is safe and not before they confidently tell customers their concerns are unwarranted.
I ordered a daal, which I thought to be the safest option. The taste was mediocre and I still got sick after eating.
The server was knowledgeable when I asked about fryers and I was able to get pakoras, which tasted enough like samosas to scratch that itch and were fried in a dedicated GF fryer! Most of the menu is marked GF so there’s lots of options. I felt safe eating here and didn’t feel sick! The only thing is they came out with complimentary samosas and baklava neither of which is gluten free so be aware of that.
I eat here all the time without issue, although whenever I tell them to make a note about cross contamination to the kitchen they clearly don’t write it down. But I never get sick so can’t be too bummed. Also if you dine in around closing the gluten eaters in your group might get a mediocre but free slice of cake.
Summary: mislabeled gluten free.
I love this place and therefore am so sad to only give it 2 stars--it's not because of the taste (which is great) or the service, (which is wonderful), but rather incorrectly labeled food that was not gluten free. As someone with Celiac's finding gluten free food is an adventure (not usually a fun one) but finding Taste of India was such a great find. I've eaten there without incident previously, and have come to trust the food--which is delicious. However, this time I added something new to my norm and ordered (for delivery) a dessert that was labeled gluten free ... but ended up not being gluten free. I took three bites and thought, "hmmm ... this tastes like a delicious gluten-laden dessert". Before taking another bite, I called the restaurant to confirm that I could continue my indulgence and was told by the person who picked up the phone that they would check -- a minute later, another person was explaining that there had "been a mistake" and that the dessert was not gluten free, as labeled. He said he would tell the owner. It's just a total bummer -- especially as I had written on my order that I had celiacs. While I appreciated the apology, it doesn't change the effects that eating those few bites have. Eating gluten has very serious effects on my body and it's a reminder that I sometimes have to take more steps than making the staff alert, trusting the menu, or trusting a restaurant. Will I go back, yes! Will I be much, much more diligent and only order what I have had in the past. Yes.
very good. Just make sure to mention you are gluten free.
