I very clearly described celiac disease and cross contamination to the waitress, asked her about what options were safe, and asked her to tell the kitchen to treat it as an allergy order (which are often the magic words for kitchens). I even asked to make sure their bacon wasn’t drained on bread, and then my meal came out with toast on the plate. When I asked the waitress about it, she said “oh, I probably should have said no bread.” Since it seemed like she might just take the bread off the plate, I explained that it would need to be remade because any crumbs or residue on the plate could cross contaminate the food. Ultimately, after conversations with both the waitress and manager I could not get comfortable that they understood cross contamination well enough to prepare food safely for someone with celiac disease.
