Ask them about *everything*. Some things marked as GF aren’t actually celiac safe, like the chicken bacon ranch Mac that has wheat-covered crispy chicken on it
They are short-staffed due to their recent opening, so come early to put in your name and then walk around town until a table is ready! They don’t take reservations.
Overall, I’m very happy to have a place my Celiac family can go out to eat. Dedicated GF fryer.
Advice for fellow Celiacs, request no straw in your beverage. We ordered NA beverages and they had paper straws in them. Our GI and Celiac dietitian says to avoid!! I told the server and he said he’d tell the manager.
My wish is for a gluten free fish fry 🤞
Clearly marked gluten free menu. Lots of options! Unusual in the North Woods! Upscale pub with outdoor seating.
Quite literally the best experience. The owners wife has celiac, so everything can be made gluten free. They have dedicated fryers. Tater tots are 100% gluten free and they offer buns and everything too. Our waitress was super knowledgeable. We were visiting for the weekend and will be returning when we come here next for the summer.
I’d been here a couple years ago & was impressed. Today, not so much. Waiter told me tater tot’s were not gluten free, so I went with the pub chips. They were stale. Salmon burger was ok but not freshly made- seemed like preformed cooked from frozen. GF buns are Udi’s. When asked how my food was, I mentioned my concerns. I got a “sorry about that” and he exited our table fast. No offer to remake chips, bring a different side, or credit on the bill. To top it off, I was charged for a refill on my iced tea! $3 for each, $6 total. Who does that?!
This restaurant has a very cool vibe: decor, games, and music played at a reasonable volume. The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable about gluten free options. Our server answered my question about the fried chicken without going to ask the chef. I ordered the pork belly as an appetizer and it was good. I’m not a big fan of foods with fat on them but I had to try them and they were tasty. I went with the Nashville fried chicken sandwich with an upgrade to seasoned tots. I rarely get to enjoy fried food! One other member of our dinner party was also gluten free and she ordered the mushroom pesto flatbread. She said the crust didn’t taste gluten free it was that good.
I frequent the Craftsman! Totally recommend if you’re GF and in the Northwoods. This place is one of the better establishments in the Northwoods, just overall. Very accommodating with gluten free (some wait staff are more aware than others) but overall just be clear when ordering, they generally know their stuff. Great drinks if you’re able to partake! (Lakefront New Grist is available for GF beer among a good variety of wines, ciders, seltzers, and mixed drinks).
I have a son with celiac and it is so hard to find places with a dedicated flyer for tots/fries etc. he said his hamburger and bun was the best ever. Coming from an autistic picky eater. Hoping we have time to come in again before vacation is over.
Outstanding restaurant for a celiac family! The majority of options on the menu are gluten for both children and adults. There is plenty to stay busy with yard games if you have to wait for your table. Craft cocktails, clean facility, friendly staff and all were well educated in celiac foods. In addition , there is a separate fryer for gluten free foods! We will be back!
8/14/21: We loved our dinner! I felt so confident in the staff, and I didn’t feel sick at all after! We got truffle oil tater tots which were ~so~ good, and then I had a sausage and veggie flatbread. You get *so* much food for the price, and the outdoor dining was exactly what we were looking for during COVID! 10/10 atmosphere
8/12/22: The waitress seemed to think the tater tots were in a shared fryer until she went to ask, so that was a little unnerving, but I got the pork Mac and cheese and Parmesan truffle tots and the entire meal was DELICIOUS. I would drive hours for this meal!!
The menu was labeled well. The server was helpful and would ask the kitchen about cc. However, they say a mahi-mahi salad is gf, but the server said the fish is grilled on a shared surface. We had the truffle tots that were made in a separate fryer, but the only thing I could order was the club sandwich and it came out with fried up meat and toasted bread. At that point I didn’t ask, but I’m sure it was a cc shared surface. 🤦🏻♀ Nice attempt but not a lot of real options for celiac safe.
Most food can be done GF, pizzas, buns, etc. GF beer, GF apps. We had GF tater tots, GF maple candied bacon with fudge and GF street tacos. Will be going back this week to try the GF pizza! Service was great, an hour wait because of being short staffed (like every other restaurant in the country right now) but the staff was super friendly and extremely helpful even though they were obviously very busy. Atmosphere inside was fun. Hope to sit outside next time, but we took first available table.
