The tacos were amazing. Make sure you tell the server about your situation and to get corn tortillas! I read mixed reviews regarding the tortilla chips (menu says they are fried) so I asked the waitress why they were considered gf but not the fried plaintains. She went to the back to ask and informed me the chips were fried in separate oil, whereas the plaintains were fried with all other food. With that being said, I ordered the avacado mango dip. I had no issues. Will be back fo sho.
Great option! Had two tacos with no issues. I would highly recommend that you avoid any of the fried stuff like other reviewers stated and you should be safe. I did not eat the chips and salsa for fear of the cross contamination. Even though they said they were baked. I would go back.... and did on our last day!
The Rum House was delicious! We started with the Chorizo and Pepper Queso with tortilla chips that was full of flavor! My GF husband ordered the duck duck goose tacos (made with corn tortilla by request) with a side of black beans and I had a 3 taco combo of the duck duck goose taco, the fried oyster taco, and the chipotle shrimp taco also with black beans. Our meals were DELICIOUS!! The menu marked all of the items that could be made GF which was a large majority. The sides were also divided into two groups, GF and nonGF. We both would highly recommend going here and asking for Jonathen! He was great!
Gluten free options are noted on the regular menu. Staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. The hostess explained the menu and said that almost everything could be modified to be gluten free, and to just ask the server. Server was helpful with recommendations and didn’t just try to get us to get more expensive things. I had chips and queso, Duck Duck Goose taco, and Cuban something taco (don’t remember the name), with smothered greens and plantains. Plantains weren’t in a dedicated fryer which the server explained up front, but I didn’t have any reactions. Definitely will be returning here.
I am conflicted on how to write this review because we have been here several times and the food is delicious. There is a nice variety of interesting tacos on corn tortillas as well as a variety of side dishes. My kids love the chips with queso which they have not had since being diagnosed. My primary concern is the inclusion of fried foods on the list of gluten free sides as there is not a dedicated fryer. For those concerned with cross contamination, this excludes the plantains, fries, and the crispy duck pieces that might be on your duck taco. Though we have had some wonderful well meaning servers, it took a bit of effort on the last visit and a talk with the manager to conclude that some items listed as GF are not safe. They seem to have a handle on the other GF options listed. So as always, if you have Celiac disease, be persistent with your questions....but enjoy because the portions are large and the food is great!
SO DELICIOUS!!! I love going to rum house! The food is great, the drinks are refreshing, and the atmosphere is fun! Everything gluten free is clearly marked, and don't be afraid to ask if they can make something gluten free that's not as it is (for example, they can easily make the nachos gluten free by replacing the pork with chicken). Great tacos, chips and dips, and entrees. A great place to go with friends, even just for a snack.
I would go back to New Orleans just to go here. First things first: if you have celiac, ask about everything. Do not get anything deep fried. There is no dedicated fryer. Some of the tacos are marked GF but may be cross-contaminated because of fried ingredients. Do NOT let that stop you from coming- just make sure you tell the server that you have celiac. Our server, Sarah, was patient and attentive and came back and forth to our table 3 times with answers to questions about ingredients. I felt completely comfortable. Good thing too, because the food is exploding with flavor! It's spicy, for sure, but not hot. I had the Mr. Biggs taco plate (my friends ate the beef patty, brought on a separate plate) with 4 tacos and rasta veggies (jerk veggies). The only problem I had was filling up so I couldn't eat more.
Love this place, tons of gf options all clearly marked on the menu. The food is great and staff is knowledgeable. Rate 4 stars because chips, plantains and other fried items (some tacos may have fried garnish or topping- ask questions) ARE NOT celiac safe because of shared fryer, even though may be labeled gf. Highly sensitive Celiac no reactions, as long as avoid fried items.
AWESOME food! Tons of gluten free options, good prices, and great food. The tortilla chips do not have a dedicated fryer, however, so there is cross contamination and they should be avoided by very sensitive celiacs. I had the taco trifecta, with a shrimp taco, flaked fish taco, and island beef taco. All three were delicious and it came with a side of mango coconut rice which was great. They also have the "painkiller" drink here, which earned them bonus points with me since it's my favorite drink! Fun atmosphere, too.
This place is amazing! We had heard good things and my daughter who has celiac disease was amazed that most of the menu was gluten free. My daughter and I ordered tacos and really enjoyed the brisket taco and jerk chicken tacos in particular and our sides were delicious, the mashed potatoes were one of the highlights. The servers were friendly and knowledgable and while they did not have a dedicated gluten free fryer that did not keep us from having excellent meals even in Mexican restaurant!
Fresh, flavorful, and good variety on separate GF menu. They told me the tortilla chips did not have a dedicated fryer. I ordered and inhaled my delectable dish of Brisket tacos, sweet potato chips, fried plantains. My pal, a local, said she's adding this spot to her favorites!
