Had avocado omelette thing, was super good, but the do put a lot of cheese so if your not a cheese person you can ask for no cheese. The hash browns are really oily. But the service was pretty good. Definitely is more like small town diner food.
Dedicated fryers. Breading on the chicken strips was amazing and crunchy. Portions are HUGE.
Celiac, no issues. Chicken fried steak and banana 🍌 bread 🥪 were divine except the gravy was WAY to sweet. Safe for celiacs, let them know you are when you arrive.
Usually hit Caffe 680 (same people)-- GF soups, sandwiches, and salads. Staff is super knowledgeable and the manager always makes sure to change gloves, re wash hands and equipment, and will work with me to adjust other dishes to be GF. I'm a pretty sensitive celiac and I've eaten here about 1-2x a week for a few months with no reaction. Asian chicken salad is especially good and both the cilantro and peanut dressings are safe. Awesome place for a quick lunch!
Have never had an issue here. So many nice gf choices that you can’t find anywhere else. My mom didn’t enjoy her burger one visit, but everything gf has been fabulous. Love the chicken fried steak and onion rings. Don’t eat there frequently or you’ll get fat. Lol
Multiple gluten free items, even breakfast which is hard to find. Fryer only used for gluten free foods. Onion rings and fries crispy and good. Bun for burger also tasted good. Server knowledgeable.
I love the staff, love the food but sometimes don't feel so great after eating here. unsure what the cause is though since the fryers are dedicated gf.... Usually end up taking a gluten enzyme to feel better after eating here so I stopped. My first 2 visits in 2016 weren't like that, just more recent visits.
Had heard wonderful things so was so excited to try The Sassy Onion. I haven't had fish and fries since my celiac diagnosis. Honestly, I was very disappointed. When my lunch arrived, it looked delicious. Sad to say the food was cold. The fries were just okay (would have been much better if they were hot). The fish was okay but not what I expected. I will definitely not be going back there. I will say, the staff and service were wonderful!!
What a find! What a treat! Loved the gf onion rings. We all had different sandwiches which were all delicious. No one got sick. Waitress was very knowledgeable about avoiding gluten. Staff all very nice. If I'm ever back in Salem I will return.
I have celiac disease and I went here twice with absolutely no problems. The chicken strips were absolutely delicious, the fryers are all dedicated gluten free, and the server was knowledgeable.
The hazelnut banana bread French toast is amazing! All their fried food is gluten free. Their gravy is gluten free. Now, if they just had gluten-free biscuits, I'd be in heaven.
Great fish and chips. Everything that goes in the deep fryers are gf. Onion rings were great also.
I was so excited for fried food, but the breading sluffed right off the onion rings and the fish was a super weird texture. I would try something else there, and trust that they understand GF. Would do on a pinch, not my first choice.
Great burger and onion rings!
Seriously good GF onion rings and fish and chips. The fryer is totally GF! I went with my non-GF family and they loved the food, too. You can eat almost everything on the menu and you can relax about getting sick. They told me they have a separate allergy-sensitive prep area and are very friendly. It was nice to order like a normal person and enjoy my full meal. Highly recommend!
The chicken fried steak was such a treat. everything was wonderful and I didn't get glutened! Service was excellent and I love that we could order French Press coffee.
Always yummy & I have never had a reaction!
Best GF onion rings and delicious cheese hamburger. GF bun very tasty. Service was awesome. Want to come back for the French toast
kids loved the gluten free bread!
Very pleasantly surprised by this place because when I walked in and the whole place smelled like sour dish rag and there were sad fake flowers on the table (not usually a good sign). The waitress brought me a gfree menu and I was delighted by all the options. I had the gfree chicken fried steak because well I haven't had anything like that in 5 years! The service was good the food was great! They give you a pitcher of coffee for the table which I love. I'll definitely be back to try out the lunch menu.
Delicious GF French toast!!! I had to order more because it was SO good. I've already been back once and I plan on going often. Everything we had was tasty.
We stopped for lunch because of the variety of gf choices. The menu didn't indicate very many items were gf but our server gave us the run down which included a lot of the menu. My husband had a burger and the gf bun was really nice. I had the gf fish and fries (all fryer items are gf). We shared very good gf onion rings. They can also do sandwiches. On the breakfast menu the gf banana bread French toast was tempting. Service was a bit slow but very friendly and helpful. $8-$12 for meals.
Wow! Just had breakfast at the Sassy Onion. I had the GF french toast made with their housemade banana bread. They coat it with nuts which adds great texture too. They also offer lunch with choices like GF chicken strips or fish and chips. I haven't had either of these since my diagnosis three years ago. Can't wait until I am traveling through Salem again. Our server Josh was very helpful and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this place!
Many gluten free options including buns, onion rings, banana bread, and more. Staff said they will continue to get more gluten free items. Bun half up well to a juicy, cheeses burger which is always good in my book!
