My husband booked a wine / food pairing experience, where they serve four courses and a glass of wine with each course. He called in advance to ask if they could accommodate my celiac disease, and they said they could.
When we got to the event, they offered us a whiskey cocktail. I declined, because I don't drink alcohol made from gluten- containing grains. When I explained this, the server went back to the bar and returned, insisting that the whiskey was probably gluten free due to distillation. I still declined, just to play it safe.
When another server came by, I explained my celiac disease and asked if any of the courses could be prepared gluten free. (The courses are rigid, so you wouldn't get to choose which food you would like. The chef pre-prepared all the food for this event) He said he'd ask the chef. When he returned, he said, "The only thing we would be concerned about is the oysters because he uses some flour on top as a binding agent. But it's Italian, and it's only a little bit, so I'm sure you'll be fine." They didn't mention anything else about the other dishes, which, when traditionally prepared, would probably have gluten in it.
It's a shame for such a beautiful restaurant and a fine dining location. Unfortunately, I just didn't feel safe eating there and we wound up leaving.
