The food here is really good but you do need to be clear with your server about your level of gluten intolerance in order to avoid cross contact. Go for the cheese grits instead of the potato cakes. They have gluten free toast and can specify to the kitchen if you are celiac to make sure that the grill is cleaned before your food is cooked.
I loved so much about this place - cute neighborhood, great vibe in the cafe, lovely wait staff and vegan options for my kiddo. Items weren’t marked as GF but the server helped me with what was GF and they did have GF toast. Unfortunately though I did get symptoms of gluten contamination. Il
Amazing flavor! Many gluten-free and diary-free options. Not a dedicated gluten-free facility but a very knowledgeable staff- our server knew about allergens in every menu item and guided us to the best gluten-free and diary-free options. Many options for an amazing brunch.
Not celiac friendly. They’re really nice and they really try, but they’ve messed up several times with cross contamination issues and I sadly can’t trust them anymore. If you’re looking for gluten free you should be okay, but I wouldn’t trust if celiac. (They gave me gluten and subbed gluten free by accident for my friend instead. On a separate occasion my gluten free French toast was dipped in the batter that the regular French toast is dipped in).
I’ve gotten sick just about every time I’ve eaten here and the last time there was a small piece of sausage in what was supposed to be a vegetarian dish. Pretty much lost any trust I might have had for careful prep and attention to cc with that one.
Update: I finally tried them again after a couple years off. I enjoyed my meal and felt fine after eating. I changed my rating from 1 star to 3. Maybe they have improved maybe I got lucky?
Knowledgeable waiter that made suggestions for our daughter with celiac. Basically said anything other than the biscuits can be made safely GF. Our daughter had gf french toast and ate it all. Her smile and thumbs up said it all. The food and atmosphere was awesome! Go here for breakfast if you are in the area.
They have been a fave of ours for 5 years and we just discovered that they are discontinuing dinner and we are HEARTBROKEN!!! (I’m also really pissy about it.)
Best food I’ve had in Portland!! Until this place, Portland was disappointing. We’d just driven across town to a reported safe place next door that was closed, so we grumpily asked if they could feed a Celiac. We’re very pleased-a refreshing change! Good service, atmosphere&food! I ate salmon cakes, meatloaf, macaroni & a mocha. My husband had (non-gf) salmon burger. Already GF items are marked &substitute noodles/breadcrumbs. (Idk about buns) Cute little cafe bar-walls w/local sellable art. Enclosed patio/fireplace allows dogs &there’s doggie deserts!-cute! You can avoid dogs inside. Full service restaurant/bar w/ tables &wait staff. Initially seemed pricy but then I was intrigued by how good their food was! Their casual options & occasional a-typical ingredients are not things I normally enjoy-but they surprised me! They manage to do all of it right! They must have a true chef! I would go here again in a heartbeat! I might insist we do again tomorrow.
Casual funky vibe with covered outdoor seating. Friendly staff and good combination of comfort food with healthy options. Super accommodating attitude permeates the restaurant which feels like a local institution.
GF bun for burgers, GF Mac n Cheese, salads, some fish and meat options as well make for atypical variety for someone eating only GF. I love a restaurant that announces their GF bread and other options on menu.
I have celiac and this is one of the few places without dedicated kitchen space I trust. When I went through an extreme sensitive phase I got some cross contamination once, but that’s out of having eaten here over 50 x in six years. Also: food is delicious. Great options for gf challah French toast etc. Drinks are delicious, waitstaff are all lovely. Plus: you can bring your dog.
Great food, great atmosphere, be prepared to wait...30 minutes+ from order to getting food. fantastic food! staff very knowledgeable. seperate prep area.
I enjoyed the first burger with a gluten free bun in ages and it was SO good!
I love this place!!!! The food was awesome, with lots of gluten free and dairy free options. Much more on the menu is modifiable (with replacements, not by just taking stuff out) The staff were friendly and didn't make my family, with all of our crazy food restrictions, feel like alien monsters. We were close to the door and it was cold (snow and ice outside) so they brought my daughter a blanket. How sweet is that?
Food was delicious! My server ensured that my food would be/was cooked separately and there would be no cross contamination. The GF challah bread was moist and tasty and the "Good Boy" was mouthwatering. A long wait on a weekend day (about an hour and a half) but definitely worth it.
I don't understand all the hype about this place. The food is nothing special. They have a good number of gluten free options but the two times I've been, the waiters were not very knowledgeable. The second time I went, I felt sick afterwards.
Love the food, staff, patios and options. Never a reaction and fantastic drinks.
The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The environment was lovely, and while the wait was longish, it was totally worthwhile. My wide and I will go there again.
Lots of GF options - noted right on the regular menu with a symbol. Items are either already GF or can be made GF. If you go on their website, you can read how they have made a conscious effort to provide GF options. Expect a wait if you go for breakfast! They do have coffee, tea and water available while you wait. Dog friendly with a great patio area. Our food was great. The server was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu items (I have other food sensitivities) I would definitely go back next time I am in the area.
Best gf place in Portland! GF Challah French Toast is incredible!
