Gluten Intolerant

My wife and some friends went to Toast and CO in Litchfield today. It was the third time my wife and I went.

Our first two experiences were really good- food, service, everything was excellent.

Today was a completely different story. My wife and a friend both ordered gluten-free sandwiches but noticed the breads looked different. We asked the server about it. She went back to the kitchen and then came out and said that my wife's was gluten-free but the friend's sandwich was not. She said that they would make a completely new sandwich for her.

After at least 30 minutes (it could have been closer to 45) the new sandwich had not arrived. Everyone else has finished eating. When we asked about the sandwich, the server said that she forgot... after waiting for what felt like another 30 minutes, my friend asked for the sandwich to go. When she finally got it, she looked to make sure it was gluten free... It was on the exact same bread as the first sandwich and was also the wrong sandwich.

At this point, the person ringing up the sandwich went into the kitchen and came out with the gluten free loaf and then the regular bread. It was then clear that our friend's first sandwich would have been fine but the sandwich my wife had finished by this point was not on gluten free bread.

The kitchen worker was apologetic and gave us a gift card... but the damage had already been done. My wife hadn't touched gluten in over 10 years and we are praying that there are no serious repercussions.

Unless its clear that staff members get some training regarding food allergies and sensitivities, I don't know how we could go back or recommend it to anyone.

It is still walk up becuase of Covid. Ask to talk to the owner Christine I believe her name is. She has a nut allergy so she knows all about cross contamination etc. They do not have separate gluten free toasters, so don’t get a sandwich toasted. If you say you have a gluten “allergy” they prepare all your food inside the box rather than on a counter surface. She told me a smoothie bowl would be safe without the granola on top. I asked to open a new jar of almond butter, strawberries, blueberries, banana and chia. so delicious! i also got a salad with grilled chicken. i did not use the dressing becuase i forgot to ask if it was safe. i also got a gluten free muffin they get supplied from mama K’a kitchen. The mama K muffin was delicious and made in a completely gluten free bakery as the owner has celiac. your best bet here is a baked good from mama k or a smoothie bowl, and be sure to ask about each ingredient (she told me coconut and nuts would likely be unsafe due to processing). all in all a great experience and I would recommend as long as you talk to an owner.

Service was great. There’s a walk up to order only due to Covid. I had the chicken sandwich and it was great. Cashier seemed knowledgeable.
