Overall a good experience and a fun environment! Just a heads up, they DO NOT have a dedicated fryer (due to churros), so nothing fried is celiac safe☹. I was disappointed but still enjoyed my enchiladas. Margarita flight was a fun treat! Our waiter was really nice and knowledgeable and there was live music while we were there!
Ordered the flautas, fajitas, and kids chicken fingers which are fried in corn batter. So many choices, and the food portions are huge and decently priced. Most restaurants in San Juan are tourist traps, but this place was quaint and homey. Awesome food! The servers double checked my order and offered substitutions for plates that aren't primarily GF.
Food was great. Staff was great. Drinks were good. We had chips and guacamole for a starter. The chips were fresh fried and the guacamole was excellent. I had the mole enchiladas, that you could order in corn tortillas…it had a very good mole. Son was able to order tacos with no issues. Really enjoyed it!
This place is a little hard to find-the address on Google dropped us 1/2 mile away-just enter the name of the place into your map. They also didn’t have a menu online when we went, so we trusted the reviews here. The menu itself says 95% GF and the server was well informed and thanked us for telling her about our allergies. Everything was very fresh, chips are made on-site. We had tacos, fajitas, and mole. Everyone really enjoyed their food and no one got sick. My husband is a very sensitive celiac. The margaritas were also very good, not too strong but just right. The staff was very kind and friendly, definitely a safe and tasty place to eat.
I don’t even know where to begin with this restaurant! 95% of their menu is gf and everything can be served with corn tortillas. The corn tortillas were honestly the best I’ve had they didn’t break apart at all! I got fajitas. I am low fodmap and they allowed me to do all peppers no onions. It was so fresh and delicious! Minimal seasoning which was helpful for me food wise but so yummy! The margaritas were unbelievable. The server we had was so kind and helpful he checked In on us multiple times. We will absolutely be coming back! I felt so safe eating here and did not get sick!
Spectacular. The menu is 95% gluten free, so all of the people in our party who are gluten free felt safe eating here. Our server was particularly attentive to the one of us who is celiac and made sure our entire order was celiac safe. On top of that, the food was delicious—quite possibly the best enchiladas I have ever had! We ended the evening with a fried cheesecake that was out of this world. You will not be disappointed if you go.
We ate here based on reviews on this app. I’d say our experience was so-so. I think ultimately it was ok but menu NOT marked and staff not entirely knowledgeable about what was/was not GF. The one thing to note is that their menu is mainly GF and so likelihood of cross contamination is low and we felt ultimately safeto eat most things. 2 celiacs in the family.
Everybody here was very friendly and helpful. The waitress went out of her way to explain all of our gluten-free options and make sure we were comfortable. The food was amazing. We loved it so much, we went back one last time before we left. The owner came over to check to make sure everything was good.
Tomate was disgusting and extremely disappointing given the large number of good reviews. The server had absolutely no clue about anything GF. They went back and asked the kitchen questions and the kitchen basically said everything in the fryer is contaminated. They were kind enough to pan fry some tortillas for me to eat with queso and shrimp, but the queso was so greasy I couldn't finish it. And the margaritas were awful...honestly one of the worst I've ever had. No idea why this place had good reviews. My dining companion didn't even drink her margarita it was so bad. No one else bothered ordering food after seeing the queso situation.
Food was delicious, also accommodated my dairy allergy and vegetarian diet. 10/10
I’m so happy I found this place! As we’ve traveled to places outside of the San Juan area, finding gluten free options definitely got harder, so coming back from a day trip and eating a full meal here was incredible. Pretty much everything except for the burritos can be made gluten free except for the burritos. Our server spoke English very well and was incredibly knowledgeable and kind when answering my questions. The chips are cooked to order and fried in a dedicated fryer, and all gluten free orders are cooked in a separate pan. The food was absolutely delicious! The margaritas were also very good and the flavored margaritas are flavored using fresh squeezed juices rather so they were all gluten free, which was such a treat! We tried the watermelon jalapeño and the sour sop margs and had absolutely no regrets. Would highly recommend!
We have gone here twice this week and will probably return. The food is good and they understand gluten free. We had one server who was unsure but the restaurant understands and takes measures to avoid cross contamination. We had tacos, mole, and chips. Very friendly and patient with our questions. Highly recommend!! Call ahead to be sure they are open, the hours seem to change.
The menu here says that “95% of the menu is GF”, personally I’m not sure if that is really true. My group ordered the nachos and I asked if they had a separate frier and the waiter said “yes, it’s ok” when I pushed back he said “sometimes we change the oil” I realized he probably didn’t understand what I was asking. The group still ordered it and I had some nachos. They were good but the chips are extremely greasy. I didn’t feel great the next day but am unsure if it was because it was gluten or all the grease. for dinner I had enchiladas which weren’t fried and had corn tortillas so I felt like those were a safe order. I do believe most of the food is naturally gluten free but I’m not confident about the frier
When we get there I told the waiter what is my situation with the food (gluten, dairy peoduct, egg, chicken….ect) and he went to the kitchen to make sure everything is doable A few minutes later the chef came out and talk true what can I have and what does she thinks I can have and is it ok I told yes Super kind and nice experience, highly recommended
I had the weirdest experience here. On the menu there is a giant advertisement that 95% of their menu is gluten free. They even advertise the find me gluten free app on the menu. However, when I went to order the waiter told me that everything had cross contamination and that nothing was safe. Unsure if the server just didn’t understand or if there is a real risk for cross contamination. We ended up leaving and not risking it.
We found Tomate on the Gluten Free app and are not at all dissatisfied. Gina, the owner, and her staff went out of their way to be especially nice to our family, and frankly, everyone that was dining. As for the culinary delights, only one word … AMAZING! The authenticity of the Mexican food was spot on. Hands down the best queso and guacamole that we have ever consumed. Very reasonably priced. We will absolutely come here again!
What a wonderful location!! Thanks to all the reviews we stopped in for dinner. We are so glad we did. Their menus on the bottom highlight that most of their menu is or can be made gluten free. The food was FANTASTIC. The wait staff talked to,us about our food and confirmed all to be gluten free. They were busy and short staffed but we were on vacation time so we relaxed and enjoyed a wonderful meal. We will be going back for dinner again before we leave!!!!!
The food was delicious. Our server Andi was very knowledgeable about what was gf (almost the entire menu) and said the owner’s daughter was gluten free so they understood about cross contamination. They took the gf orders separately, so they would be cooked separately and served separately. Such a great find!
My wife and I ate here tonight, and it was fantastic. One note - the flour tortillas (obviously), mole sauce, and the chorizo are NOT GF. We had the queso fundido and taco sampler, and the margarita flight. Wonderful food. Met Felipe (owner) afterwards, and we chatted for quite awhile, and he is very knowledgeable, and as mentioned, has a daughter that has to eat GF (but does not have Celiac’s). It’s too bad we’re leaving tomorrow morning, or we’d be eating there again.
