Unsafe food handling practices. Be careful!
I have been recently diagnosed with celiac disease and have started the diet a week ago or so. I visited this location today (January 2025) after doing some research and coming to the conclusion that by not adding granola to my açaí bowl it would be safe for me.
I was ordering for me (GF) and for my husband (gluten containing). I told the employee I have a gluten allergy and asked her to switch gloves when preparing my bowl. She prepared my husband’s bowl first and did change her gloves for my bowl but prepared the food on the same counter she had just made a sandwich on. When she cut the banana (that she used for both my bowl and my husband’s) she placed my piece straight on the counter and I urgently asked her not to put it in my bowl.
I am new to eating out after starting this diet and can notice many mistakes I made along the way. I will probably not be back, but if I ever did here’s what I would do differently:
- notify them of my gluten “allergy”
- ask for a new pair of gloves
- ask for a separate work station or paper lining (so my food does not touch their surfaces)
- ask for my food to be prepared first if ordering a gluten item for someone else
Edit: another reviewer talks about how they store food and how crumbs could be everywhere (even on their fruit for bowls) and that made total sense. They used a scoop for my fruit but I wouldn’t be surprised if they used their hands… items are probably contaminated anyway… Will not be returning to this establishment.
