Great food! When I notified the chef of my “allergy” he explained that his wife has celiac. He mentioned that there is ~a lot~ of gluten in the kitchen and said he’d do his best. I went ahead with it as I needed food and was out with a group. Waiting to see if I have symptoms of a glutening but so far so good. Was reassured chef did his best with food preparation but he seemed to think there was still a chance of gluten. Yummy food and I appreciated the honesty and knowledge!
My wife says “amazing! I love it there!” Each time we’ve been, we’ve had knowledgable, informed service people that make sure to communicate your allergy with those that need to know in the restaurant. The food is great, and there’s something tasty for everyone (lots of veggie options!)
Vatos is great but I never pinned them as particularly stellar in the gluten free department but last time I was in, the person making the food overheard me say gluten free and asked "Celiac?" When I said yes, they said they'd be sure to clean the space for me. While I was eating I noticed they have a food safety certificate up. Kudos on keeping it safe for allergen folk, Vatos! 👏
(Update 12-21: They've changed their menu to have "Celiac friendly" and "Gluten friendly" options, marking what is free of cross contamination and what isn't! I come here weekly and haven't gotten sick once.)
Most of their tacos are or can be made GF! It's all marked on the menu clearly with a red GF symbol. The cashier knew exactly what to do when I said I have celiac and made a note of it for the cooks to change gloves and make sure everything was clean. I got a carne asada and a carnitas taco and they were SO flavorful and delicious and best of all I didn't get sick! The line was pretty long but it was a Saturday night, and even then they were pretty fast. I can't believe it took me so long to try this place but I'll definitely be back soon. *Be sure to tell them you have an allergy or celiac, otherwise they won't know to keep your food separate.
Another update: They've changed their menu back to just GF with no mention of celiac, but this is because it isn't certified They still take the same precautions and can make almost every taco GF!
Any tacos can be made gluten free but most are already gluten free as they use corn tortillas. 3 tacos have fried stuff on them but can be made gluten friendly. Chips and dips are gluten free as well. Got the jackfruit, chicken, and carne asada tacos and all were very good.
