Food gets 5 stars. Ability to hand celiac and fulfill orders—1 star. My celiac husband got sick.

The first time we ordered, the hostess understood celiac perfectly and made suggestions. When the order was delivered, my celiac husband ate a piece of salmon nigiri and tasted wasabi. He checked under the salmon of every other nigiri in his salmon lover’s bento and found wasabi in every piece—something the hostess confirmed they’ll omit because it has gluten in it.

We called to report the error. Although the hostess was very apologetic, the best she could do was offer a free bento the next time we made an order. Of course, my husband got sick. And didn’t get dinner.

A week later, we made another order. We were $5 under the $60 minimum for free delivery, but the hostess wouldn’t make an exception for us because of the free salmon lover’s bento she included that would have pushed us beyond the limit. Despite repeating our order back to us at least 3 times, my Diet Coke was forgotten. When we called back to report, the hostess claimed that she didn’t hear us order a drink. A receipt wasn’t included in our order for us to check.

It’s a shame, we gave them a second chance cause we loved their food. But at this point, we’ll go to any other place.

I used to love Watami for their mouthwatering creative sushi rolls but they currently don’t seem to be as GF-friendly as before. I talked to staff on the phone, and her tone was quite uncertain when answering questions. She did say that they do have a few regular celiac customers though, who typically order very plain Jane rolls. I’ll cross my fingers that one day they’ll be able to better handle folks like us!
