While I don't typically grocery shop here, the chain as a whole is a go-to and a godsend while traveling if you need gluten free or any other allergy free items. The buffet always has options, even in smaller stores like this one, and allergens are marked.
Before it was Amazon-owned, I shopped at this WF weekly for most of my groceries. Since then, they no longer carry many of the GF items I used to purchase, including cereals, crackers, snacks. They have substituted other cereals and snacks that have more sugar and less protein than I used to get. Fortunately there are other stores in the area that now carry more products that are GF, unlike when this store first opened.
Not much choices... store disposition was strange.
I talked to a chef making taco items who was very rude and unwilling to discuss options with me. He told me that nothing in the made to order, pre-packaged, salad bar area was considered gluten free and said it as if it was absurd for me to not know that.
Ate at the buffet/salad bar with no issues. I steer clear from items that are next to gluten items and therefore avoid CC issues. The store itself has a lot of GF items, especially in the frozen/refrigerated sections. Personal-sized cakes, breads, and cheesecakes!
The staff was awesome! Francisca asked about my sensitivity and created a separate work station for me. She’s great! Can’t say enough good things
Love the salad & hot food bar at whole foods. All the items are marked with allergens & there’s very few items with gluten so comfortable with the cross contamination risk of a salad bar. Just just fill your take out box with roast meats, hot sides & salads
They make no effort to keep any prepared foods away from contamination such as placing crusty bread on top of the salad bar with crumbs falling everywhere, etc. Labeling looks promising but if you look closely they are often wrong, not matching up with actual food, many don't have allergens listed and use odd wording like graham instead of wheat. Overall, really frustrating that a supposedly healthy store makes zero effort to try and make their foods safe.
They have so many great packaged items but so disappointed they have no freshly prepared safe gluten free options. We live close and my husband and I eat here often but there are no safe items for our celiac kids. We would think a place like this would have its own counter or area for preparing safe food. Even the gelato wasn’t safe and the employee had no idea what I was talking about. Whole Foods needs to sept it up for having fresh food for gluten free and celiac people.
There are so many gluten free options- from prepared food, fresh ingredients, pastas, breads, donuts, frozen items, crackers- you name it! We have even stopped in here for a gf cheesecake (mini rounds) before movies! Awesome! 🙌👏👍
Unless your looking for over priced frozen bread,cake or cupcakes - Don’t wast your time. Very disappointing selection.
They have gluten free calamari, gluten free roll options for burgers and all of the gluten free items labeled appropriately on their menu. They have about 6 different flavors of chicken wings that were all gluten free! Their French fries aren’t gluten free but they offer a salad as a side choice instead!
This review is for “The Kitchen Counter” at this Whole Foods Market. I enjoyed a gluten free made to order burger (avocado, grilled onion, grilled mushroom, beef). One of the workers, whose son has celiac disease, offered to make me sweet potato fries from scratch in the back so that there wouldn’t be any cross contamination risk with fryer oil. My husband said his balsamic salmon risotto with roasted vegetables was delicious. I also enjoyed a glass of wine. James ordered a Gold Rush which was super tasty.
I agree, it is a hustle to find GF in here sometimes. I’ve asked them which one was GF on their hot bar but was told probably non because they can’t guarantee cross contamination. It’s weird that a place like Whole Foods can’t muster up willingness to accommodate us since this is a health food store, when LOVEY’S and the Co-op can, and they are much smaller businesses. I also agree, their food often has too much pepper.
Frozen selection is good but there are too many times where some of the hot food bar items don't have the ingredients listed or they will list the allergy containing ingredients on the bottom but then when you read the entire ingredient list is has gluten?! It doesn't make any sense. I have also seen people use spoons from a gluten item that is sitting right next to a non gluten item and use it, cross contaminating the food.
Ordered veggie and cheese catering platters for a party in my home. GF accommodations are not available for catering orders (I asked) and the person who took my order seemed put out that I declined the crackers that came on the cheese platter. Quite disappointed.
I love eating at the hot bar at WF because the ingredients for each item are always listed. I’ll usually get some smoked chicken and roasted sweet potatoes and a steamed veggie. There are also a few sushi options that are gluten free! Just avoid anything with sauce (like spicy mayo) and obviously don’t use the soy sauce included. (BYO tamari!)
Barely celiac friendly. Went in to grab something quick to eat. Got the soup and took one bite and knew it had gluten. That was the only thing they said they had that was gluten free. Very disappointed.
I'm a local and do most of my regular shopping here with many gf choices. But I no longer get anything from the hot bar or sandwich bar (even though they have gf bread) because of cross contamination -- have gotten sick too many times. I do eat from the salad bar but with my own dressing.
Be warned: the hot bar now has very few selections that are gluten free. Even the chili now has wheat in it. On a good day they will have one entree item that is gluten free. Most days though all they have is a side dish or two and maybe a soup. Most of the side dishes now include soy sauce. I spoke to customer service about this a few weeks ago. Nothing has changed.
