A Wild Wood Worker's Warning

To my fellow celiacs:

Do not trust Wild Wood's advertised 100% gluten-free claim.

I worked as a cashier/barista at Wild Wood for a little over a year until I quit in December 2017. Like many of you, I was initially delighted a restaurant existed that catered primarily to the gluten-free community. However, I eventually discovered that celiacs' health and safety were not high on upper management's list of priorities.

Dubious decision-making and reckless ingredient sourcing were somewhat common occurrences during my time there. Much to my chagrin, the responsibility often fell on me to ensure that the food being served was safe for celiacs. For instance, on several occasions, I caught cupcakes going out with unsafe candy toppers, ingredients whose containers clearly stated they contained gluten, purchased by the owner. My manager and I also constantly fought with the owner to stop serving beer, but to no avail. These and other highly alarming experiences led me to believe that Wild Wood as an institution does not have the best interests of the celiac/gluten-free community in mind.

I write only now because after I quit, I trusted my coworkers, including my manager, to make sure things were kept safe. But they're leaving. And, to say the very least, current management is not to be trusted.

As a celiac, I wouldn't feel safe eating there anymore, and I feel it's my responsibility to alert you to my mistrust.

I'd like to stress that this message is primarily meant for celiacs and anyone sensitive to cross-contamination/trace amounts of gluten. As for everyone else, consider taking your business elsewhere, ideally to an establishment that does not hold a callous disregard toward the health of its patrons.

Be safe, Justin
