7 course Omakase was one of the best experiences i’ve ever had in my life.
10/10, best gluten free sushi place i’ve ever been to.
This restaurant is entirely gluten free and delicious. The waitstaff is lovely, and Chef Kate does a fantastic job!
I'm visiting Portland and was so excited to find so many dedicated GF restaurants. Zelle Sake was the first restaurant I tried and it was the best food I've had in a while. I'm very cautious and asked a thousand times about things being gluten free and the server assured me every time that everything was gluten free and the owner takes lengths to make sure of it. Ate everything without worry and had zero problems!
Waitstaff confirmed that they are dedicated gluten-free, and everything was fantastic. We really liked the lobster kara-age. I needed to avoid sesame seeds this week, and they were great about communicating with the kitchen. I’d been here years and years ago when they weren’t focusing on being gluten-free, and the quality definitely hasn’t diminished.
Great experience. Most everything is gluten free. Even the crunchy topping is gluten free on the sushi rolls.
OMG! SO AMAZING! I have to be GF and soy free. They were able to accommodate me. It was delicious, we had several rolls and sashimi. Also had their green tea with brown rice, which was delicious savory type of green tea. We went to salt and straw down the street for ice cream afterwards 😍
Expensive but good. Skip the saki flights (the one we had, house favorites) was terrible. We didn’t even finish it. But a few minutes of discussion with the excellent waitstaff got us 3 that were excellent.
I had no idea how great this place is. I would eat there even if I didn’t need to be fully gluten-free. The ambience is lovely, the food was amazing and the service was perfect.
On the expensive side but best fish in Portland IMO. Love this place.
Perfect date night spot! The ambience is classy, romantic, and the food is delicious too. High quality sushi for a decent price is hard to find in Portland but Zilla Sake nails it! We are dying to try their omakase too. We will definitely be back here for another date night soon
Delicious and dedicated gf!
I had such a wonderful experience here and felt safe to order whatever I wanted because the entire restaurant is gf.
You can’t go wrong with any menu item… even the miso soup was exceptional.
I also have a nightshade allergy, and our server took the time to make sure every item we were interested in was safe for me.
I’ll definitely be back.
Easily one of the best dedicated GF restaurants I’ve ever been to, and the best sushi place I’ve been to - including during my pre-diagnosis sushi-obsessed years. I’ve been here about a dozen times and never had the slightest reaction. The staff is great, the quality is amazing, and I’ve had several of my all time best rolls here. My only warning is that they can get pretty busy some nights, so just be aware that sometimes they can’t take walk-ins.
The sushi is delicious and the entire kitchen is 100% GF!! My new fave in PDX!!
O.M.G. Amazing. I had the Japanese fried chicken, scallop rolls, and Hana rolls. Everything was delicious. All gf :)
100% gluten free (except for a couple bottled beers) and this was one of the loveliest dining experience I've had in so long. Went for my birthday and the server helped curate a gorgeous dinner with lobster karage, a goddess veggie roll, a couple of fish rolls, and this flat rice noodle butter mushroom dish that was so amazing we were talking about it the rest of the night. Everything was so fresh, super high quality, and the flavors are so thoughtfully and beautifully paired. Highly recommend for safety and a gorgeous experience. (You have to reserve online to be seated, just as a heads up.)
Went for a birthday meal- everything was *incredibly* delicious and safe from start to finish! Glorious food- safe kitchen- and they asked about vaccine status for indoor seating. I love this place and will continue to eat here as long as they are gf. The whole place is gf except for some beer pours.
I’m also allergic to soy and they were extremely careful to make sure I didn’t get sick. The sashimi was super fresh and delicious. I especially liked the salmon and yellowtail/hamachi. Highly recommend!
Eaten here several times and always had a good meal. Rolls are very tasty. Service can be a little questionable (seem to rush us out towards closing, while simultaneously saying to take our time).
Appreciated that it's dedicated GF. The extensive sake menu is nice. It's strange how half the 4 oz pours are served in a box but I'm glad the bartender told us.
No gluten in this place! Amazing! They don’t use any imitation crab or soy sauce. On real crab and tamari! So happy!
Did the okasame (sp?) or chef’s tasting menu here— AMAZING! I’m not a huge seafood person but everything was delicious and fresh- tuna, scallops, salmon, eel, flounder, prawns; and crab were included. Sake mule was top notch and they had an extensive drink menu. Everything was GF including the soy sauce- had zero reaction after trying pretty much everything they had. Will definitely be back with friends for the tasting and atmosphere- the chef was very nice to talk to and explained everything in detail. Excellent date night place for sure!
I think everything is gluten free and everything I have tried here was delicious! The staff is personable and knows what they are talking about. It’s pretty small and on a popular street, so you may want reservations if possible.
Zilla has replaced the unagi on their menu with anago and is now 100% gluten-free. I’m celiac, and it’s so lovely and relaxing to simply be able to go out for a nice meal and not think at all about allergies! The sushi is delicious and deliciously simple (no cream cheese here) and the sake menu is vast.
One of the chefs at this restaurant was really rude when I politely told my waiter that I had celiac and was very sensitive. Though the unagi is the the only thing that contains gluten on the menu, I saw it all over the cutting board, the knife, and the water. (This is a restaurant where the chef makes the sushi right in front of you). He said "I guess I'll try my best" and "plenty of celiacs come here and are fine and don't get sick". He was really rude and embarrassed me. I hate having celiac, but I can't do anything about it and if you can't accommodate me or simply won't then don't advertise about being gluten free. After I finished eating he said "look you lived" in a snarky voice. Really not necessary, also, I got super sick. Hard to walk home because my stomach ache was so bad. So yeah if you have celiac I wouldn't bother, it was a horrible experience.
Absolutely love this place! The waiters are very informed. They have a lot of gf options. The rolls are simple & delicious (more traditional Japanese style and not Americanized). The fish is stellar and they have real wasabi (grown in Oregon).
