Celiac

Has anyone been to Helen GA during Oktoberfest with celiac? I’ll be with a large group of people so won’t always be able to choose our food itinerary

heather26895 I go to Helen twice a year for a scrapbook convention. I’m not celiac, but very gluten sensitive. There are no dedicated gluten-free restaurants, but I highly recommend the Nahocchi grill, bigg Daddys, La Cabana Mexican, 55 Thai, and Paul’s Steak House. I usually stick those and I don’t have any issues. And for dessert you can hit one of the Hantzel and Gretel chocolate shops. Sadly, you won’t be able to eat any of the German food or German bakeries as most of it is breaded and fried. Or covered in gravy.

josiasbahena I went with my wife and she is gluten allergy and lactose intolerant. The Mexican spot is typically something we do cause most stuff is made from corn and not wheat. But we tried that seafood place. Paul’s on the river. Had seafood but better option.

jana9539 My husband and I went to Muller’s Fried Cheese in Helen because they have a gluten free menu and I ended up getting pretty sick. He was fine (he is not gf) so we know it wasn’t just bad food.

naama72272 I was there yesterday and ate at Mullers Fried Cheese it was delicious and they took excellent care over my food and I am celiac then I also went to freeze cream which was amazing and they have a separate counter for the gluten free rolled ice cream and just about a million options

Tuck Muller’s is great, and I’ve personally never gotten sick from eating there. Their fried foods are done in a dedicated GF fryer. Just be sure to tell them allergy/celiac so they change gloves.

jean125282 So agree with Helen. I don’t think any German food is gluten free. Paul Steakhouse I found to be great with a large group. I’m gluten intolerant and have eaten at a German restaurant down an alley and fortunately had no problem (luckily). Going up 12/02 and get back to you.

maria713 I was there in Sept and had no issues. There is plenty of food that is available and you just need to be careful. We did not go to Paul’s and were told by locals not to go.

jean125282 Have diverticulosis, gf intolerance, dairy free but had no problems with food at Old Bavarian Inn in alley. Had sauerbraten as suggested. No gf menu.
