Got the fish tacos.. they were very well done. However, staff seemed slightly annoyed over the fact I requested gluten free and only told me two options.. Our food also sat for a long time and was cold when we got it. We reminisced on this place for years when it was actually good.
Long wait over an hour before 5pm on a weekday. It was so noisy we couldn't carry on a conversation. Got the fish tacos. We were disappointed in the price for two small dry tacos. No drink list, so we made due with water. Waitress was nice but couldn't be bothered to tell us about any drink specials, what was on tap, or whatelse we could have, so we got water. Very expensive for what you get - only two small tacos for $18, with black beans and rice. I was still hungry, but there was no desert menu so we didn't get to try anything else. Not worth the hype and long wait. Disappointed.
We eat here a lot and can always find good gluten free options. We’ve been told that they have a fryer that only does French fries. We’ve never had any problems from eating here. That said, we wish they had a gluten free menu and had a gluten free fried fish. Maybe when the new restaurant opens (fingers crossed).
We ate at Blue Moon in April 2022. Our server was very knowledgeable about what was GF and what could be modified. They did not have a GF menu or GF buns though. I had the modified fish and chips in corn meal instead of breaded. It was very good. Our server was great as well. I’m rating 3/5 purely on the lack of marked GF options.
I was a little scared to go here after reading the reviews, but decided to brave it. The cons: their gluten free menu is a separate menu, but it’s actually the regular menu with things that are gluten free marked on it and things that can be modified- but it isn’t real clear on some things and was kind of confusing. Pro- the hostess and wait staff know what gluten is and asked if we were Celiacs (we are) and told us that they have a shared fryer which eliminated quite a few things on the menu. Con-Several things that most likely were gluten free weren’t marked as such and the waitstaff wasn’t sure either. We did decide on the ribeye and the braised risotto stuffed portobello mushroom. And wow- I’m so glad I did. My son enjoyed the rib eye but that portobello mushroom was out of this world good. I could eat that every day.
So, yes, it is safe to eat here, but you do have to be cautious and if you are sensitive to cross contamination avoid anything fried. The staff is great and assured us they would alert the cooks that we had an allergy alert which was reassuring. While they aren’t super knowledgeable about every item on the menu, they are very willing to help figure things out and took it seriously.
We enjoyed our meals and did not get sick at all. My son is really sensitive to cross contamination so he is the “canary in the coal mine” and was fine. I will definitely come here again just for the portobello mushroom.
Was assured by my server that the shrimp and grits were GF. Tested the dish and gluten was found. Also important note that they do not use a dedicated fryer. I spoke to Scott, one of the owners. He explained that they cook their fries twice (blanching them the first time). They switch fryers when doing this so this means that some fries will be cooked in oil that has flour in it and then fried in the “dedicated” fryer. Might be okay (?) if you are gluten intolerant but big cross-contamination risk for Celiac. He has instructed his staff to let celiac individuals know that they should not order items cooked In the fryer.
I wanted to eat here because of all the amazing reviews and when we showed up, it looked exactly like the type of places I always enjoyed pre-celiac days. It didn’t disappoint! Super delicious food and obviously a well-known favorite. But, the place was super busy and we waited almost two hours for a table. Our non GF friends went to eat somewhere else, but we chose to wait it out. The food was amazing. I’m pretty sure it took so long because they actually cook everything fresh. I got shrimp and grits at the waitress’s suggestion. I was concerned about the waitress’s attitude while I ordered because she rushed us and didn’t really allow me to fully ask my questions about food prep. I also originally ordered fish and chips because I rarely get fried GF food and she told me the shrimp and grits are one thing they are known for and I can probably get fish and chips anywhere on the beach. That made me question her knowledge of gluten allergies. But I trusted the reviews and didn’t get sick.
I ordered the Mahi Mahi BLT, and it was fantastic! They served it without bread, which was fine with me. My husband had the jerk chicken and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great food, great service and reasonable prices!
Wow! We are so happy we found this place. Incredibly safe and the amount of menu options that are gf is more than the norm! We got the caesar salad, which was so good and had homemade dressing. Jerk wings that were super flavorful and the fish and chips( which wasnt marked gf on the menu but we asked after seeing the reviews and sure enough its safe!) Service was 5 stars as well, we’re already picking out our meals for the next time we go!
This place was great and very accommodating! The host provided a menu with gluten-free options and the waiter was knowledgeable enough and took care in taking the order. He checked back several times to make sure everything was ok when it came out. My kids were very excited that they were able to get fries since they use a separate fryer!
Who would have thought a restaurant in a strip mall at the beach would be so delicious?! Our service and food were outstanding. Everything was clearly marked. None of us with celiac got sick. I got the chicken with masked potatoes, mushroom gravy, and greens. Amazing!
I have 7 food allergies including gluten (CD), tomatoes, broccoli, peas, almonds, pork and avocados. I also have IBS so salads are out. There was no GF menu but they said they could accomodate me. First they told me the crab cakes didn't have breading. I was going to get that when they later told me it has a small amount of bread crumbs in them. I had a burger without a bun. It tasted burned and was pretty small. Their french fries were cooked in the same oil as the fish so that was out. My friend that I had dinner with had fried fish and said that was really good. I had a much higher better burger at Mako Mikes.
Do NOT come here. Although there are online reviews stating that this restaurant offers a gluten free menu, as of May 2014 there is no gluten free menu and there are very limited options. The waitstaff is unfamiliar with the concept Of gluten free and weren't very eager to be accommodating or make changes to make an item gluten free. But on the positive side the management insists a gluten free menu is coming. But call ahead to be sure before you waste your time.
