Chaya Macrobiotics

This restaurant serves the hotel above it and has a fairly small macrobiotic menu on which about a third of the items are marked as gluten free. Great East Asian food if not strictly Japanese. Menus available in English and staff could look after us really well even if we didn’t have much shared language. The food was absolutely delicious, the kind of vegetarian food that would convert the most passionate meat-eaters. Very satisfying and flavourful. The service was very friendly and attentive. We had gf desserts as well which were patisserie style and excellent. There is another branch in Japan which we didn’t get to try but worth a look based on our great experience here.

This store sold the first gluten- and dairy-free strawberry shortcake I’ve seen in Japan. The cake was surprisingly good and made with an almond cream instead of regular whipped cream. I didn’t eat in the attached restaurant, but talking with one of the waitstaff, I found that they had a few gluten-free lunch and dinner options available.
