Great taste of local Louisiana cuisine for celiacs! They have several classic Cajun dishes and sides that are celiac safe, like gumbo and étouffée. I tried the crawfish étouffée, a dish I haven’t had since my Cajun grandmother made it for me over 10 years ago. It was very good. The red beans and rice side was also tasty. The chef/owner is normally in the kitchen and the staff reassured me that it’s very important that they don’t cross-contaminate Celiac/gf orders. (Apparently, a family member of his has celiac.) They get docked a star, tho, because there was a miscommunication and I was served a plate of normal étouffée, but the chef caught it as it was being put in front of me. Three minutes and a sincere apology later, and my gf meal was served. I was relatively anxious after the mishap, but I did not get sick. Eat here!!
Outstanding food and service! I cannot speak highly enough of Chef Ron's!Two visits to NOLA this year and have had the gluten free crawfish etouffee, blackened alligator appetizer, and the gluten free gumbo - all delicious! Excellent food and very helpful and knowledgeable wait staff. They do not have a separate gluten free menu, but the servers can tell you the options easily. They are cautious to avoid cross contamination, but be sure you let them know if you have a medical issue such as Celiac or allergies.
I'm from Germany and we are on a Roadtrip from Chicago to Florida. Chef Ron's Gumbo Stop Restaurant was so deliciouse and awesome. They had a lot of Gluten Free Meals. The Costumers are verry friendly and helpfull. You have to go there;)
We stopped on our way into New Orleans for a visit. It was so good we stopped on the way out too! They offered gluten free fried shrimp, which I had both times. (I got the feeling - though no one said anything - they're happier to do it for multiple orders, which is understandable.) It's on our list for every time we go now!
Chef Ron welcomed us in tonight I had a feeling that this would be a good experience from that moment and he didn't let us down. I have Celiac and was able to enjoy the BEST gumbo and some really good crawfish étouffée. My husband, who is not gluten free, enjoyed this place and the bread pudding. I wish I could eat that! My only thing I wish was different was that he made gluten free bread pudding ;). We will be back here!!!
I was so excited about this place but I need to caution you - they are not well set up to handle gluten free people during busy hours. The menu has NO mention of gluten free items, there is no separate gf menu, and the waitress misinformed me and I was poisoned. Only the seafood gumbo is gf, not ALL the gumbo. The jambalaya is, but most other items are deep fried or pasta or sandwiches. For a restaurant with a gigantic sign outside indicating they are gluten free friendly, they should at least mark the gf items on their menu. I was really upset with my experience. The chef was "sorry" but really folks, have a protocol!
I was thrilled to find gluten free gumbo and jambalaya so that my kids could try regional cuisine. There were many gluten free options at a reasonable price. I should add that the gumbo is some of the best I have had gluten free or otherwise. Our non gluten free friends were happy with their meals as well. The portions are generous and did I mention delicious. Chef Ron took the time to talk to me and we discussed why he began serving the gluten free community. In short, because he recognized the need. Wow!!! Would definitely return.
We flew into New Orleans and needed somewhere to eat so I fired up my Find me GF app and it led us to Chef Ron's! I can't say enough wonderful things about Chef Ron's! The food was amazing!! We had a group of four and we all had delicious dishes!! I had the GF sausage jambalaya with red beans. I am a super sensitive Celiac and I rarely go out to eat because of this. I Did NOT get sick after I ate and for me that is rare! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Chef Ron came out and talked with us, took pictures with me and got just excited as I did that I could eat his delicious food!! This place made this Celiac very happy!!!!
Excellent staff, very helpful; excellent food. It's a great local hole in the wall full of New Orleans flair. My first time eating gumbo, I had the seafood and hubby had the sausage and chicken. It was good but I don't think I'd have it again, or any gumbo. the jambalaya is a different story. Excellent.
Stumbled upon this gem on our last day in NOLA. And we were SO impressed by the friendliness of the wait staff. When I mentioned I have celiac they knew exactly what menu items were celiac friendly and without asking, the waiter even mentioned that there would be no chance of cross-contamination. Super impressed, very cheap and the best Cajun we've had our entire trip!!
Even though most of the reviews here are great 5 star reviews, that was not my experience at all. The chef did not come to our table, the wait staff was not friendly and did not seem to know anything about celiac or even gluten sensitivity. When I asked if they served any gluten free fried seafood, the girl looked at me like I was nuts and said no. After I mentioned these reviews and actually showed her pictures, she said oh they can only do gluten free fried foods sometimes, before the pan's get used. There were very few GF options. I had the gumbo, which was not that great. The food is over priced too. This place is a dive!! Will not return.
After reading other reviews I knew we had to stop here while in New Orleans and I am so glad we did! Sadly they were out of the gluten free gumbo so I got the crawfish étouffée which I had never had before it was a little on the spicy side for me but still very delicious. The red beans and rice were also very good. The waitress was friendly and was able to show me the gluten free options. Chef Ron was not working that night but it would have been great to interact with him like many others have. Overall great experience trying some good southern food.
The gumbo is fantastic and you can't even tell its gluten free! They use sausage, shrimp, crawfish, and rice in it. My boyfriend who doesn't have a gluten allergy and grew up in New Orleans said it was one of the best gumbos that he's tried! I highly recommend it! Note: the specialty food does take a while to be out because they will make it for you right away if they don't have it pre-made
We stopped based on all the amazing reviews and were disappointed to find that they had just sold out of the GF Gumbo. We started to leave, but the waiter stopped us and said that many other items were already GF. We went a little crazy with our order and got Red Beans & Rice, Jambalaya and Shrimp Creole (For three people) each also came with a side. It was a crazy amount of food, but so delicious. Very nice staff and great food.
I've been to several places that had a GF menu but this place really does. The GF seafood gumbo was delicious. And they can make several other items on their menu GF, including crawfish étouffée. Had I known that the crawfish was going to taste that good I would've ordered. Enjoy GF friends!
Everything we had was excellent and between the 4 of us we tried just about everything: gumbo, jambalaya, scampi, bronzed drum, red beans and rice, kids got blackened chicken and hamburger and finished off with flourless chocolate cake. I was ecstatic to have a gumbo I didn't have to cook myself and I would have enjoyed it more with hot sauce, but the kids couldn't keep their spoons out of the bowl! Staff is really nice and helpful in choosing gluten-free dinner options. Highly recommend this place!
I love this place! I placed an order to go and Chef Ron went out of his way to make what I wanted since I have celiac. This was my first time eating from there and it was absolutely delicious! He made me gluten free seafood gumbo which was the best I've ever had and gluten free fried shrimp which were great too! I can't wait to try other stuff from there-I'll definently be going back!
I'm so glad I found this place. The chef came out to speak with us and asked I was a celiac and said that pretty much anything can be made gluten free. The seafood gumbo was awesome. Plan on trying the fried catfish next time :) P.S. They have catering.
Great staff! Chef Ron came out to offer me options since I'm allergic to gluten and also allergic to shellfish. He went out of his way to cook an étouffée with fish for me. They take good care of the gluten free customers. If you are visiting New Orleans, make sure you visit them. Food is delicious.
Great, GF, authentic New Orleans food experience! Chef Ron easily answered my concerns about cross contamination. His years of experience in hotel dining makes a big difference in his willingness to safely nourish his customers. As an award winning chef, the meal was everything we were hoping it would be an more. The GF gumbo had deep flavors and generous amounts of crawfish, crabmeat and shrimp. The GF fried catfish was perfect. My dining companion also dined GF and enjoyed a redfish, GF red beans & GF jambalaya. To say the least we left stuffed! I look forward to visiting again.
GREAT food in an awesome little hole in the wall. Staff and Chef Ron were very knowledgable about Celiacs, and Chef Ron later mentioned he could even make GF fried green tomatoes on our next visit by setting up a separate fryer. Our waiter recommended the Bayou Scampi and I could not have been happier with it. They also have plenty of non seafood options for people with seafood allergies (my husband). He had the Roast Beef poboy with potato salad and he was impressed with both, saying the potato salad was one of the best he's ever had. We will definitely be back.
I had the jambalaya and the red beans and rice and they were absolutely delicious!! Chef Ron even brought out some fresh fruit for the children to nibble on. I'd give the food a 5 star. They were out of gumbo, and the choices for gluten free were a little limited, but they are really nice and aware of celiac disease and seemed careful and everything was delicious. It's a must try!
