Six months into my son’s celiac diagnosis we finally decided to give Chipotle a try. Unfortunately, it went about as we expected. I’ve heard from many others that chipotle is generally a good option and that they take precaution. The Independence MO location does not.
For everyone that we spoke to while we were there, it seemed that no one knew what gluten was or how to take precautions for a gluten allergy. We managed to get one woman to change her gloves. But when we inquired about grabbing ingredients from the back, the staff said they “do not do that for gluten allergies.” That was it. Take it or leave it.
We understand that the risk of cross-contamination is low here, but with all spoons touching the flour tortillas and then going right back into the ingredients, the risk is still present.
If we try Chipotle again, we will try a different location and hope for better precautions.
I've had great success with their meals and the employees taking the proper precautions to make my meal GF. HOWEVER, their queso dip is listed as GF on their website and I've tested it with Nima and it tested 'low gluten'. Chipotle's customer service was extremely rude when I let know and to this day it's still listed as GF--- but it is not.
Chipotle does not have a gluten free menu but instead has a list of gluten-containing ingredients to avoid. Cross-contamination is a concern, however, so let the person taking your order know that you are gluten free and if you need them to take the proper precautions.
From their website: "If you avoid gluten, don't eat our flour tortillas. If you are highly sensitive to gluten and would like us to change our gloves, just let us know at the start of your order. You should be aware items containing corn, including corn tortillas (chips, soft corn, and crispy corn tortillas) and corn salsa, may have a small amount of gluten from potentially co-mingling with gluten-containing grains in the field."
I always ask the first person if they would change their gloves because I am a celiac. MOST of the time, they are happy to do it. They take me down the entire line to avoid cross contamination with other servers. I'm quite sensitive to gluten and haven't had any issues.
Food was good, but no gluten free wraps and all the food seems to be cooked in the same area, so contamination could be a issue if you are truly gluten free. 8 bites in and my stomach started hurting. I wouldn't waste my time going there again
Easy to go gluten free without holding up the line. Doggone tortillas anyway...
I ordered chips and guacamole and asked if they could scoop my guacamole from a fresh container to prevent cross contamination. Initially the young man agreed but then an older gentleman who was his boss raised his voice and refused. I did not want to risk getting sick so did not eat here. The older man raising his voice was rude and embarrassing.
