chompies is NOT gluten free. they are "gluten friendly" which means possible contamination. it took me months to figure out that my constant Celiac symptoms were from a weekly lunch there. Wait staff assured me that all was okay. when I finally pinned down the manager he pointed to a smaller "gluten friendly" label on the clearly labelled. "GLUTEN FREE" menu page. I stopped going there and my symptoms went away! This is sad... Chompies is a nice, family run small chain with a vast menu. But if you are gluten sensitive, beware!
Horrible! First tip that this is NOT a GF friendly restaurant: Server announced "Oh yeah, GF! My manager gets mad at me because I'm always screwing up & putting regular bread & not being careful when serving GF customers..." Asked for manager, was assured we would receive non 'glutened' service. Alas, the cabbage soup came with....a regular non GF bagel hanging on the spoon, which was in the soup. Asked the server if bagel was GF: NO. Server stated, well we can just take it (non gf bagel) off & you'll be just fine. Needless to say i did not eat here & will NOT recommend Chompies to anyone with Celiac/Gluten Allergy.
Chompies is a great New York style restaurant. The bagels absolutely are spot on NY style! The GF everything bagel is a must! I really enjoy the GF cookies they have and sometimes I can find an awesome GF flour mix there as well.
Food is very good, but I have gotten sick before. My theory is that the place is mostly staffed by students, avoid the place close to finals, that is the time I tend to get sick from them. Also, student discount.
I have eaten here before in the restaurant and bought bagels to take home and been fine. Today, however, I was hit suddenly and hard while still at the table with a headache and upper intestinal discomfort. I am guessing that I got a bingo bagel by accident even though I double checked with the waitress before I dug in.
They have a "gluten friendly" menu. Bagels and breads are made in a dedicated gluten free bakery from someone else. So I thought it would be a great place to go. However, they don't have a separate toaster for toasting the bagels. The manager came by and basically said if you have a gluten allergy don't eat here because of the cross contamination. Would NOT recommend eating here if you have Celiac Disease or gluten sensitivity.
The upside about Chompie's is that the food is VERY delicious! Another upside is that they offer "gluten free friendly" items. (Bagels and home fries in particular) I had a reaction, however, after I ate a GFF bagel. It might have been contaminated in preparation. Recommended but BE CAUTIOUS!
Very friendly wait staff and the Belgian waffles were awesome! The bagel was toasted and really good too. I didn't have a reaction to any of it so I definitely recommend the one on University in Tempe!
Though they have a wide variety of gf options, THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND CROSS-CONTAMINATION. They store the gluten free and regular goods in the same case and don't seem to be bothered by them touching. My waitress also had little understanding of what gluten free meant and and couldn't understand why I wouldn't want fries that had been coated in flour. Basically, if you're gluten free because of an allergy, I'd go somewhere else.
Yes, they have gf bagels and rolls (what I bought today), and they are delicious and softer than others have sold...however, the tradeoff is that it's because they use eggs as binder/ mouisurizing agent. And I'm even more allergic to eggs.
Gluten free menu is very good and the g-free bread is really great! It's too bad the service at Chompies is TERRIBLE! Our waitress could not have been more rude or angry that we were seated in her section. No drink refills were offered, unless you had coffee (in that case she came around with a pot, once), she greeted our table by saying "well, I suppose you want pickles", and offered little to no help with the gluten free menu (she did tell me the french fries are not g-free). I would never wait for a table here again. It seems the wait staff gets flustered with too many people.
