Chuy's recently opened up near where I work and it was chosen for a business lunch. I called ahead to find out if they have a gluten free menu and they do. I appreciate when they have a menu I can ask for because it opens up communication with the server. When I arrived I asked the girl who seated us for the gluten free menu and she didn't know it existed. She asked a manager and it was brought to me. The gluten free menu is very limited - especially for a Mexican restaurant where so much is normally naturally gluten free. You cannot have any of the meat (all marinated in beer), anything fried like chips (shared fryers), rice (not sure why), or even queso. It was painful to sit and watch the others snack on chips. I asked for some corn tortillas so I'd have something to snack on before the food arrived and they obliged, but I wasn't sure if I could eat the salsa or other dips they provided. They weren't on the gluten free menu. I tried to ask the server, but she either didn't know or didn't understand what I was asking about. I don't see why the basic pico de gallo-type salsa would be unsafe, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been surprised. Their guacamole is gluten free, but I'm not a guac fan.I ordered cheese enchiladas with boom-boom sauce and refried beans. They listed the boom-boom sauce and one other veggie red sauce as safe. The enchiladas were delicious and I really liked the boom-boom sauce. The refried beans were refried beans. I wish I could have had rice.If they would make a change so that the chips and salsa were safe for me to eat, I would go back and probably frequently. I love Mexican, but without chips it's just... sad. At least one other Mexican restaurant in the area fries the chips separately, so I will stick with them.
