We walked into this little hole-in-the-wall with high expectations, as the smell from the outdoor smokers was incredible. We walked up to the order counter, where the lady just looked at us, with no greeting. I asked if she could show us what was gluten free, and without even looking at me, she reached behind the counter and pulled out a clipboard that just had a list of menu items with various checks for different allergens, and sat it in front of me. The brisket platters are served over bread, so I asked if the gluten in that item was in the brisket itself or just in the bread. She said she thought it was just the bread, but she clearly didn’t really know. I then asked about the smoked chicken, because I could see that the 1/2 chicken (which came with cornbread) was marked as containing gluten, but the chicken sandwich could be ordered on a gluten free bun. I asked if that item was only marked as containing gluten because of the cornbread, and she said, “Yeah, that sounds right.” At this point, I was feeling super uncomfortable, but I thought that since the menu clearly said “GF options available,” the kitchen would know what they were doing and I could just order the meat with sides that were marked GF on the menu. I then asked if I could get the 1/2 chicken, and substitute beans and potato salad for the cornbread and coleslaw (the prices for these on the side item menu were exactly the same as the items that it normally comes with). She just looked at me and said, “No.” I was incredulous, and said, “Are you saying you can’t make any substitutions?” and she said, “Yes, no substitutions.” That was the last straw, and we just turned around and left. It’s possible that we just had a bad experience with one person, but I definitely had no confidence that they could feed me safely, nor did I even feel like they wanted my business.
