I have had the mild bird bowl several times and not had a reaction. I always write that it is for an allergy when I mobile order and have inquired in person about the GF status. I am quite sensitive. I have not tried some of the items that seem to cause more issues — like the tofu or broccoli. The food is delicious! A great Baltimore local spot.
The first time I ate here I had the chicken which was amazing and did not have a gluten exposure reaction. Unfortunately I did react the second time where I had the Tofu Brah and Tempura Broccoli with tiny sausages. I was told everything we ordered was GF (and the food is so delicious!!) but based on my gastric distress something wasn’t. My guess is maybe the toppings of fried onions and garlic which are packaged and imported? I’m not sure.
You know that trip where you start by describing an amazing meal you had there ... this is that place. Small footprint, so very little seating. We did takeout and the food held up well. The Original Chicken Meatballs ricebowl, The Neighborhood Bird ricebowl, Pho Spiced Cheesesteak Eggroll ... I will dream of you until we meet again. Everything on menu is gf except buns.
Hampden location - not safe. After reading the good reviews on here, I felt safe ordering online. I wrote a long note re: celiac disease and the need for my order (Tofu Brah Bowl) to be gluten free or that they should just cancel that portion of the order if it is not. At pick up, they assured us that they reviewed the note and everything was GF, separate fryer, etc. Ordered same thing today - came with a different sauce on the side because the normal sauce (which they assured me last time was gluten free) apparently is NOT gluten free. I love Ekiben, but cannot order there again because they do nor have a grasp on gluten free.
I was kind of skeptical about this place, especially since gluten free options aren’t mentioned anywhere at the actual location, but I chose to trust this app and wow did it pay off! So yummy, what a fun take-out option that I wish we had up in Philly. The cashier assured us that everything but the buns is gf and she noted on our order that it was for an allergy. We got the tofu bites, broccoli tempura, and a tofu bowl (which we did realize had the same tofu) which was far too much but very tasty.
I really enjoyed the salad version of the nest sandwich and was excited that they had gluten free for many of their offerings. A little too greasy for my taste but the flavors are awesome. The very loud music and few seating options make this a carry out restaurant, especially the one in Fells point.
Ekiben’s has changed their menu. Everything is now GF except for their steamed buns. I hit them every time I’m in Baltimore ever since I had their fabulous GF fried chicken. What a shocking surprise to learn the fried chicken is GF. The addictive crispy tofu looked different my last visit and I couldn’t reach them by phone so I didn’t try it. Fortunately I stopped in on my back to the car to ask about the tofu. Then to be told everything but the buns are GF! Wow! I can’t wait to try their famous crispy broccoli next time. Do check before ordering though, because it is not apparent looking at the menu, and that may be intentional.
