This had been a favorite of ours when we made our annual trip to Indio. It closed during the pandemic.
It was recently reopened with a new owner and menu. I regret to say it no longer has a mostly gluten free or friendly menu. Jackalope was known for its barbecue. The new Jackalope had some barbecue but I found that even though their dry rub is gluten free, their house made barbecue sauce is not.
When we called, they indicated numerous gluten free offerings. In reality, the server told me that the chef indicated that there was cross contamination and he advised against eating there.
I would not think it is celiac safe.
No gluten free menu.
We will not be back.
Previous review that said there is a separate fryer is WRONG.
They do label many items as GF, but they charge extra for side options
Our waitress checked with the chef for us and said it is SHARED with the breaded onion rings, so no good for celiacs.
Also, when you cannot have the fries due to the allergy, they will charge you an extra 3 bucks to substitute a salad and wont tell you of the upcharge. If you also need to be dairy free, they have very limited dressing options.
They dont seem to really pay attention to yelling them there is a gluten allergy. My wife told them she had an allergy to gluten and that was why she needed the salad instead of fries. Told them not to put croutons on, and the salad came out with them on.
So I dont know if they changed things since the previous reviews, but they nickel and dime you for your allergy needs. This place is fine for someone just going GF who doesnt really need to
I am giving this place five stars for the GF FACTOR, as they had tons of options (most of their entrees are GF), a clearly marked menu, and a dedicated fryer. My son was delighted he could actually eat a plate of fries...and he didn’t feel sick afterward!
That said, I would give it 3-4 stars on Yelp as the food was a bit overpriced and not seasoned well enough. The Truffle Parmesan fries had such potential, but left me a bit underwhelmed.
Our waiter was fantastic and very knowledgeable.
The food is great. They have a big GF menu. Lots of choices, BBQ, tacos, fries, steaks, salads & everything clearly marked on the menu. I'm not celiac but very gluten sensitive & I've eaten here 3 times with no issues at all.
