I went in during the lunch rush, when it was my turn to order I told them I needed a gluten free sub. They asked if it was preference or allergy, so I just said it was an allergy. And then they said oh it is going to be a minute then because we will need to clean the whole food line. I then said I though they had a dedicated space to prepare the GF sandwich and then they said well we do, we can make it on that if you want, and I was like… yes?? They then proceeded to tell everyone behind me that it would be awhile before getting to their orders because I needed a GF sub. They ended up accommodating and I did not get glutened and I of course was very appreciative, but the front end of the experience was not the greatest.
They wiped down the counter, changed gloves, washed hands, used a piece of sub paper to make the sub on, and got out a clean knife to cut the sub with. The process seemed to take them an extra few minutes and thankfully they weren’t busy. They said the sub bread is made by Udi’s. Tasted like the Udi’s soft white bread that’s sold at most grocery stores. The sub was great and they were very friendly and happy to go through their GF process.
Came in person today after having ordered and picked up in the past… they were out of gluten free bread and offered me wheat bread instead. I explained that I have celiac/severe gluten “allergy” and asked the staff to prep a sub tub instead. Explained the need to change gloves to avoid cross contamination and the staff agreed, then put the tub in the prep line next to the other sandwiches and the next staff member put their bread contaminated gloves on the tub. I explained the need to keep the tub away from the bread gloves and asked for a new one. They told me they can’t really realistically keep the tub away from the bread indicating that they don’t have a separate space to prep the gluten free options. I mentioned the clean paper another reviewer used in the past and the staff put it down on the line, then walked away and the other staff were prepping bread over the clean paper. All this to say the staff doesn’t understand celiac and didn’t indicate having a prep space for GF items. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem safe here for me.
They were EXTREMELY careful. They wiped EVERYTHING down from the slicer to the oil and seasoning jars. You are able to get a regular or a giant sub! The bread is absolutely amazing too! The employee on the slicer, I wish I got his name, remembered our order from weeks ago, and the couple behind us. AMAZING SERVICE!!
We’re on the road and were glad to be able to stop here for lunch. The #7 was more expensive than at home (being there in the neighborhood of a truck stop $$) but it was also HUGE. Jersey Mike’s is always our go-to for subs.
