I asked if they had a gluten free menu when we were being seated. The staff member pointed to a woman (I assume she was the owner) and told me to talk to her about gluten free. After we looked at the menu for a few minutes, the woman came over to take our order. I only saw one menu item that was labeled gluten free, and I noticed that if I ordered the Pho noodle soup there was a note to request gluten free noodles. So, I asked the woman if she could tell me which menu items could be gluten free. The woman told me (in a tone of voice that didn't seem friendly to me) to just tell her what I want and she can make anything gluten free. (In my 11 years of gluten free dining experience, I've never found that statement to be true). Then she proceeded to lecture me on how I need to be sure to tell her I need gluten free BEFORE I order, or she has to throw the food out. I don't know why she lectured me about this, but it made me feel like she was complaining about her gluten free customers, and it did not make me feel welcome. So, I ordered a fried rice dish for my daughter and the Banh Xeo (the one menu item that was labeled gluten free) for me. Then, I asked if there were any appetizers that were gluten free. She named four options (out of 8 or 9) and since one was a fried egg roll, I ordered that as a special treat. I hadn't had one since we moved to California more than three years ago. When the food arrived, I was disappointed. We found the rice paper wrapper of the egg rolls to be thick and tough, difficult to bite through and chew. My Banh Xeo was crispy on the outside, but gooey, slimy, and undercooked on the inside, and the flavor was lacking. I've had much better gluten free fried egg rolls at Vietnamese restaurants in Boulder, CO. and Houston, TX. I've never had Banh Xeo that was worse, and Banh Xeo (a Vietnamese savory crepe dish) has always been one of my favorite items at a Vietnamese restaurant. My daughter liked her pineapple fried rice. I did not get sick from eating there, and I believe it is celiac safe. But due to my negative dining experience there, I will not be going back.
