Excellent gluten free options, unlisted on the menu but the servers will walk you through to find the best option.

No longer dedicated gf fryer and staff/mamagement not knowledgeable about celiac. GF fried items make celiacs sick from cross contamination. NOT SAFE
— No gluten-free information on the menu
No longer gluten-free friendly. Not safe for Celiac. Do not eat here if gluten-free.

This restaurant menu reports many things that are GF but not for celiacs
Either their servers don't understand the process in the kitchen, or the kitchen staff doesn't take the proper precautions. Wife ate their fried scallops and fries, told the server it needed to be GF, was labeled GF, and still got sick. Not a trustworthy GF restaurant.

The server was not properly trained for Celiac. The menu states many items can be prepared GF, and I notified the restaurant ahead, upon arrival, and the server, but I got sick from the meal. The food and service does not justify the menu pricing. I had real hopes that they understood and could take care of GF customers. I will not give a second chance due to getting really sick.

Unfortunately, the menu has changed. still some gf choices, but not as many. Sadly, the fries are no longer GF. I'll probably just come for drinks in the future, and not eat, as there are better GF choices in the area with as good a view.
Martingale Wharf used to be one of our top "go to' restaurants in Portsmouth. My wife has a gluten allergy and they had a awesome gluten free menu that was great for everyone, including those who can eat gluten. We went there a couple of months ago with some out of town guests and were totally surprised when given the menus. We asked the waitress what happened to the old menu and whether there was a new chef and she denied that there was a new chef and said that it was a "seasonal" change in the menu. We won't be back. River House and Surf are excellent options.

**** UPDATE ****
OK Unfortunately I need to update my review. We went back here a couple months ago expecting it to be awesome as usual...but wow what a change.
We were told that there is a new chef and apparently he switched out the rice flour for regular flour. Knucklehead.
Before new chef we could eat about 90% of the menu, with new chef we can have approximately 20%. Very dissappointing and will not be going here anymore.
The River House and Surf are surely better options now.

my original review....
went here for the first time last week. Where do I start? The atmosphere is just awesome and the view as well.
Had a lengthy chat with the bartender and was informed that anything with flour and fried is done with rice flour, so the fryers are 100% GF.
we opted for apps. the clam chowder was THE best that I've ever had, it has a smokey flavor so if you don't smokey then you may not agree. also had the crab cakes and calimari. Both Awesome!!!

If you do not want Seafood this may be an option, but if you want Seafood go somewhere else. All the Seafood minus the salmon contains Gluten.
Used to love going here - WAS well worth the cost. However, now under new ownership/head chef, they've completely changed the menu. I was looking forward to coming here last month for a function and was going to order my own food separate but was unable to. No longer can do very much of anything. They were able to make a burger, on gf bun; however, I will not be going here again if within my control. Very disappointed. :(

Used to be the best GF place around. New menu/chef has minimal options. Major let down as this used to be a go to treat.
Restaurant under new chef who doesn't care about GF. No longer makes it a priority on the menus which means no longer a priority in kitchen. No more GF fries, no more GF crab cakes, etc.
Not celiac safe.

They recently got a new chef and no longer make GF a priority. They used to have many options and their fries were delicious! Not anymore. I called to ask if there were any GF options since I saw their online menu changed. They said that they could do a few things like sandwiches but to give extra time to prepare it. This place used to be amazing for GF, now I will not go again.
The menu is 90%gluten free. menu items are marked only if they contain gluten.
Yes
97% of the menu is gluten free with only a handful of items that aren't. Very knowledgeable staff in multiple areas of the venue (there are two bar/lounge areas in addition to multiple dining areas). Food was excellent. They take limited reservations but will text you when your table is ready.

Before placing my order, I informed the server that I had celiac disease and made sure that the crabcakes I was ordering were gluten-free. I was a bit nervous when a different server brought them out from the kitchen and did not announce anything about them being prepared gluten-free, but decided I was being too anxious and ate them. They were very good. However, when we ordered the pot de creme for dessert it again was delivered by a different server and had a cookie stuck in it. As she was turning to leave I asked her if the cookie was gluten-free, and she replied that if I had stated I had celiac disease, it probably was, but she would go ask the kitchen. This server never came back, and we sat staring at the dessert for almost 10 minutes, before spotting our original server and asking her to check. She said that even if the cookie wasn't gluten-free, it had not been swirled around in the pot de creme (not comforting). She also went to go check with the kitchen, came back out shortly afterwards, whisked the dessert away with many apologies, and brought us a new one. Considering that the owner's wife has celiac disease and the menu claims to be almost entirely gluten-free, I was very uncomfortable with my experience and the training of the servers. The incident with the dessert made me worry that my entrée was also contaminated. I did not get sick, but I also did not enjoy myself.

90% gluten free, the Celiac way! An understanding and dedication to providing a gluten free meal, the staff is also genuinely concerned and attentive. They even have a dedicated GF chef and of course, separate GF kitchen. The food...fabulous! Fresh and artful plates that call for my return and an atmosphere that can't be beat. Casual and so Portsmouth, also artfully done...fast becoming my favorite choice of restaurants.

excellent food, knowledgeable staff and a big gf menu. I had scallop risotto, which was amazing, truffle fries and seared ahi salad, great as well. we went in the winter and they have outdoor heaters, beautiful view, we will definitely be back in the summer.

I am insanely excited! it was explained to me that the owners wife is celiac. 90% of the menu is gf. They even have a dedicated fryer. Our server, Jess, extremely knowledgeable and attentive. I am also vegetarian, and it's the best black bean burger I've had in forever. Husband had fish and chips, he reports as excellent as well. Am about to become a regular!
My wife, who had Celiac, really enjoyed her salmon blt! Very Celiac knowledgable and friendly. Will be back - nice to know this is a safe place for her!

everything great. full menu. cheese curds over fries heavenly.

Really great! I was so happy with a menu that had more gluten free options than any restaurant I have eaten ate since being gluten free. The food was great, service was excellent and the location is fabulous with a great water view and a sophisticated atmosphere. Well done class act!

My favorite restaurant on the seacoast!!! So many options. Awesome atmosphere! Highly recommended sitting deck side by a fire!
Loved the lobster roll on a gluten free bun. I also had fresh oysters, yum. Great gf menu
Yes
Very excellent lunch on the deck overlooking the harbor! 90% of the menu can be made GF, buns are dairy-free as well! My server was very well knowledgable about not only GF but other allergy concerns as well, will definitely go back for dinner/apps one night for live music on the deck with their fire pits!

Went in July and was excited because I thought I could finally get a cheeseburger with GF bun AND French fries at the same restaurant...I thought they had a dedicated fryer. Unfortunately when I asked my waitress she said "actually all we do is fry the French fries in a separate spot in the fryer...but it's fried in the same oil as everything else." Very disappointing. My cheeseburger and GF bun were good but no French fries. And no GF beer options either.
Went here back when I was first Diagnosed. The Chef actually came out and took down a list of all of the Foods I could not have. It was one of the Greatest experiences I've ever had at a Restaurant.

The fries are delish and they have a dedicated GF fryer. most dishes can be made GF.
