This place is absolutely wonderful! As embarrassing it is even you have a disease your apprehensive to go into establishments. The young man that took my order was understandable and told the crew we have a gluten allergy immediately. The food was absolutely delicious abs beard was gluten free.
I’ve eaten at McAlister’s dozens of times. I steer towards the sandwiches and ask for gf bread. The Sandwiches are always generous portions and are pretty tasty.
They usually ask if it is an allergy or a preference, of course the only answer is “unfortunately it is an allergy.” If they don’t ask I mention it’s an allergy, to make sure it is handled properly.
I’ve not had a reaction here that I can remember.
YMMV. But they have been a pretty reliable restaurant for me.
Update March 2025: This has become one of our favorite restaurants! Inexpensive and great food, with zero issues after trying 3 different sandwiches. Original review: GF bread for sandwiches. Apparently, all sandwiches can be made GF. Menu marked for other GF options. I had an Italian sandwich with their potato chips and a pickle with no problem. Food is real good, but a little pricey for what it is. Will definitely go back though.
My boyfriend has celiac disease and I have an allergy to bay leaves and am gluten intolerant. He went into McAllister’s and asked about all of the allergies, cross-contamination, food options, etc.
Soups are marked online as gluten free but are not actually gluten free as they are made with wheat tortillas. I had asked for the potato soup and it technically isn’t gluten free.
They do offer gluten free bread and will take safety precautions for cross-contamination with gluten if you state you have an allergy!
Gluten free bread available for sandwiches and the baked potatoes are also gluten free! Quite extensive menu, most of the deli meats are gluten free as well. Can’t have soup or the nachos because the nachos have chili on them, but there is still quite a variety of options including the chicken plain nachos with the side of queso. They have a pick two option where you can get a half sandwich and a loaded baked potato and you can choose gluten free bread for that as well. My mom with celiac has never had a reaction from eating here.
