Been here multiple times, so I knew what the gluten free pasta looks like which was fortunate. My party also ordered ‘normal’ pasta with same sauce, and they ended up bringing us identical plates and not gluten free pasta. Fortunately, I didn’t eat any but it was close to the end of the night on a busy Friday. Always try to confirm with food runners. (The gluten free pasta is penne/rigatoni shape.)
The host told us the owner is celiac so the kitchen is truly GF for the items marked as such. However the waiter then told us a few items marked GF are fried in a shared fryer (potatoes, penelle). So the choices got more limited. We were there for our anniversary on a Monday night and my husband told them I was GF when he made the reservation. We had a few dishes and they were delicious, but then the waiter told us they’d run out of GF pasta. The pasta was going to be the main event for us—eating GF out is difficult and Italian is one of the foods I miss most. We were flabbergasted bc even though the pasta is handmade, there are really great dried GF pastas on the market now—Rummo is an Italian brand. Couldn’t they keep something like that on hand? We had two desserts instead, but I still left hungry. No celiac symptoms—just hunger and disappointment.
So, the menu is limited. It’s a small shared plate restaurant. There are some options but no seafood or chicken can be prepared GF. We had the brussel sprouts and the prosciutto to start. Both were delicious. The homemade pasta is yummy. I had it pesto and my husband had the ragu, both were really well done. They are not accommodating to modifying the menu to make menu choices GF. We had the rice pudding and dark chocolate mousse (budino) for dessert both were super rich and great tasting!
Best GF pasta I’ve ever had. There were a fair amount of GF options. I do wish they had more GF protein options, I believe the fish and prosciutto were the only ones. They may be willing do a parmigiana without bread crumbs (I didn’t ask). But we did have plenty to eat and they had multiple GF dessert options.
Pelato had the best gluten-free pasta I’ve ever had! They make it fresh in-house every day, and their sauces are incredible! Everything is marked on the menu, and our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful, letting us know that the fryer isn’t dedicated and that the Cacio e Pepe unfortunately uses pasta water from gluten-containing pasta in the sauce. But the vodka sauce and pesto were amazing! Definitely will be going back.
Unfortunate experience with the owners wife. Before I dive into that- yes it has GF pasta, but other than that there isn’t much on the menu. The staff isn’t knowledgeable and doesn’t even seem to care about GF.
Food would have been good (we loved their NYC restaurant years ago and Luogo), but one entree came out and the other one still hadn’t come out after 20+ minutes. The owners wife came over, and Instead of offering an apology and taking significant charges off the bill, she came over to our table in a huff and offered to comp the missing entree and it would be out in 4 minutes. We expressed our disappointment and understood it was a busy night, but that we were bummed by the experience. The conversation escalated into the owners wife storming off after yelling at us that “20 minutes isn’t long in a busy restaurant.” She then went on to say they were going to offer us free dessert. When I said we didn’t want that, we just wanted our original food, she sarcastically screeched “reallyyyyyy.”
All I can say is 20 minutes IS long between entrees and we had to flag our waitress down just to ask what was going on. Avoid this restaurant unless you want your night ruined.
Pelato may be one of my new favorites in Nashville. The owner’s wife and daughter are celiac so they totally understand GF. Almost all pastas can be made GF (and it is one of the best GF pastas I’ve had out), and are cooked in separate water. Lots of stuff on the menu for GF, and some can be modified to be GF. I had fantastic mozzarella and prosciutto, great pesto pasta, and a peach melba for dessert. Will so be back! Super safe
Wowowow! Had an amazing meal here last night. The gluten free pasta is the best I’ve had in years. My waiter told me anything made in the fryer was not celiac safe contrary to what another reviewer said on here so I would double check if you go. We had pasta, salad, broccolini, escarole and beans, and a chocolate budino - it’s the next day and I feel totally fine. I can’t wait to eat here again!
