The staff knew what they were doing for gf. They have a special tray that the gf crusts go on through the oven, a dedicated cutting board/pizza cutter, they asked if I wanted a new spoon for the sauce (I said yes), said all of the veggies/toppings are gf because they clean/sanitize the cutting boards between veggies/toppings (although I’m not sure about that, I should have asked if those cutting boards ever have gluten on them...). I got a gf crust, sauce, cheese, and pepperoni for my daughter and she loved it, hasn’t been symptomatic. I totally trust this place!
I would not consider this place friendly or celiac friendly. You can have sauce and cheese. That’s it. She said the only other topping that was offered gluten free was Italian meatballs. I don’t know how vegetables ended up with gluten all in them but what can you do? I had to ask for my cup, my salad, and if the ranch was gluten free twice. The worker really didn’t know what she was looking for so the other employee went back to check and she said ranch and Italian were gluten free and then the other girl says she said the ranch wasn’t gluten free. I said no she didn’t I heard her. Then I made the lady repeat herself. I then had to ask for my Cesar salad again. She hands me a Cesar salad with ranch on it. I said since when did I ask for ranch on my Cesar. My daughter is the one who needed the ranch and you handed her ranch. She said you asked for ranch I said no I didn’t. I ended up just saying forget it about any dressing on my Cesar at this point and sat down before I sounded rude. On a positive note the employee that was helpful just didn’t smile at all changed gloves and used a new spatula to spread out her sauce with. I’ll take all the precautions I can get but a smile and friendliness is always great too!
We tried to eat here on a Sunday afternoon and were told that they had run out of GF pizza. There was no sign posted. Staff indifferent, very disappointing.
The staff isn’t properly trained in cross contamination. I ordered the cauliflower crust and specified I was celiac and it needed to be gf. I don’t know what they did but I got violently ill. Spoke management and they apologized but I wouldn’t trust them.
Ate there twice and got sick both times. The counter workers were careful to change their gloves, so I'm not sure what the issue was.
I went the other night and they were so quick and willing to accommodate. I asked for a gluten free crust and the worker instantly changed cloves and called out before putting my pizza in the oven. They then placed mine in a box to avoid contamination with my friends pizza.
They make everything at the same counter, same gloves with no washing hands... Just a new pan. Not gluten friendly due to cross contamination entire way down the line.
I'm gluten free because I'm nursing a gluten intolerant infant, so I don't need to worry about cross contamination. However, here was my "gluten free" experience today: no one changed gloves, and they used the same cutting board instead of a designated GF one. Skip this location if cross contamination is an issue for you.
They have always been super understanding and friendly when I’ve been. As soon as you say the gf crust they ask if things need to be wiped down and gloves changed. The downside is they only have one oven for everything. So if you are super sensitive to gluten I would stay away. My symptoms have never flared up though
They make all the pizzas in the same area from the same topping bins. Unsafe for celiacs.
The food is very good but not safe for Celiacs or nut allergies! They’re supposed to inform you of almond flour in cauliflower crust and they’re supposed to use separate utensils when preparing and cutting and they didn’t.
The staff is careful if you express to them that you cannot have cross contamination. I watched them prepare the pizza, and requested topping from the back up containers down below. My little one and I both have celiac and have not experienced a reaction. Not the worlds best pizza, but quick and good. *Make sure you watch them prepare it and ask for toppings and sauce from below!
Mostly friendly staff. One girl who works in the evening always remembers that our orders are gluten free due to an allergy, so she always wipes down all of the area to ensure no cross contamination. Gluten free crust takes very good.
As as soon as I ordered a gluten free crust, the server immediately changed gloves and grabbed a different tray for my crust. He ensured the toppings were gluten free as well. When it came out of the oven they used a specialty tray and different cutter dedicated to gluten free. I really liked the crust and will for sure be back!
I’ve read great reviews for other locations of this chain but I can’t recommend the airport location. The staff used the same utensils (ladle for sauce, pizza cutter) for my GF pizza and my husband’s non-GF one. Next time we’re at BWI we’ll go back to Silver Diner instead.
I have Celiac Disease and I've never gotten sick here. I am very sensitive to gluten and have always watched what they do. I usually ask them to wipe off counters and they use different utensils to cut and place my pizza on. The GM is very knowledgeable. No place is going to be gluten safe unless the whole restaurant is gluten free. You always take a risk! Just he your own advocate!
Asked for ingredients to be put in separate on my gf pizza from the back due to watching them cross contaminate ingredients. Manager came from the back & advised if you have an “allergy” this is not the place to eat. Even the back is cross contaminated
Though they change spoons for the pizza sauce when you order gluten-free, the sauce is already contaminated from the many times they used it to spread sauce on all the other pizza crusts. However, upon my request, they pull out fresh tubs of sauce, cheese, and the other toppings. As another reviewer mentioned, the pizza pans do have holes in them and they do not wipe the counters like I have seen Chipotle do. But I am not sensitive and I already feel like I am holding up the line and making them jump through hoops, so I don’t request them to wipe down the counters first. Pizza tastes awesome and I love getting gluten-free pizza and racking up rewards points at the same time using their app.
They change their gloves (but I’ve been there multiple times and sometimes they don’t, so ask) and have clean pans to put the pizza on through the oven. The process is not entirely free of contamination, but I've never had problems and I'm Celiac. The price is decent too! You can get as many toppings as you want.
Great protocols...changed gloves, separate pans, cutters and sauce. We could see everything in the process and were impressed.
While the lady changed gloves, they cut it with the same pizza cutter and took the pizza out on the same tray they put all other on. I felt the cross contamination within minutes of being done eating.
Delicious gluten free crust, plus they very carefully keep the crust separated from contamination, cooking it on a separate grill plate. The lady here was very celiac friendly. She said a cook of theirs has celiac, so they are very careful here. Had the crab, tomato and cheese pizza and it was great!
The Staff was helpful and took precaution to keep my Pizza safe. I enjoyed the Cauliflower Crust and it was FANTASTIC - gf and I’d def recommend it. I have Celiac Disease and didn’t experience any issues.
Most of the staff here aren’t friendly or helpful and finding someone who is trained about gluten free and cross contamination isn’t easy. If you do go here, you have to watch and then talk them through it, making sure they don’t use the same utensils, etc and then be prepared for attitude if you have to correct them. It’s just not worth it. * Not all Pie Fives are like this, just this one seems extra bad.
The staff was very knowledgeable about their gluten free options. They asked if this was an allergy, changed utensils, and were very aware of cross-contamination. The pizza was one of the best I’ve tried. No issues.
Staff was nice but not knowledgeable. I walked them through every part of making the pizza and watched them very closely to make sure the pizzas didn’t touch. No employees touched the pizza without fresh gloves. I also asked that they do fresh sauce and spoon as well as the toppings! My daughter is very sensitive.
