I’m sad to share this but it is a lesson for due diligence on everyone’s part. Before I ordered, I shared that I had celiac and was quickly assured that my meal would be made gluten free with diligence given to cross contact (changing gloves, dedicated fryer, etc). The server said that they were writing it down as serious and would talk to the kitchen staff. Later, when my meal came, I again asked for confirmation that it was gluten free and was told it was. I was skeptical because the bun looked the same as glutinous ones but I did not think to press it in the moment. While I was eating fries but before I bit into the burger, a manager came over asking if I had ordered a gluten free burger. After I said yes they apologized and took the plate away. The server came back over and apologized and said that it was the fault of the kitchen because they (the server) had asked the kitchen staff before taking it that it was gluten free. Later, the manager said that there were multiple points where both the server and kitchen staff should have caught it and is planning on talking to all of the staff because of this misstep. I thanked the manager because this is serious and many people’s health depend upon it, especially when Red Cow is often recommended on #GFTCMN. TL;DR listen to your instincts and ask questions/ask to speak to a manager when ordering. But even when you do, mistakes still happen.
Have eaten here several times without issue, but my last visit, I got sick. We typically go during slower times, but this time was a very busy Saturday night. After reading other reviews, I would say that they are still Celiac Friendly, but you have to be diligent every time you go. I admittedly have become lax after several times of going, but just telling them I had celiac and needed to be gluten free was not enough the last time.
The staff, for the most part, was extremely knowledgeable about gluten free items on the menu, and how to prepare everything safe enough for those of us with celiac. And when someone didn’t know, they always go and get someone. This has become our go-to restaurant. They even have a gluten free fryer!! Also VERY vegetarian/vegan friendly.
I went to dinner on a weekday evening, probably around 8:00 p.m. and clearly explained to the server that I have celiac disease and I'm very sensitive to cross contamination. He ASSURED me that they are very careful and use separate surfaces for gluten free food. When he brought the fries out, I asked again if they were done in a different fryer that had not seen any gluten. He said NO, and proceeded to tell me that when the restaurant is busy, they don't use a separate fryer for gluten free items because it slows down the kitchen. (And he would not have told me this had I not asked.) My fries that night were cooked in the same fryer as cheese curds and onion rings that are coated in flour (Very thankful I didn't eat them, I could not imagine how ill I would've gotten.) When I explained to my server that I can't eat the fries because I will get extremely sick from them, he didn't seem to care. It seems they care more about the flow of their restaurant rather than the well being of customers. I do not recommend eating here if you are very sensitive to gluten, although they try to make it seem like they know what they're doing, they clearly do not and frankly don't care.
Wonderful! Great selection of Gluten Free options, with so many burgers/sandwiches to choose from. I Told the host and waitress I have celiac and they were very cautious. The one burger I really wanted wasn't GF but she modified it by removing the chips and it was excellent. The GF bun was possibly the best ive ever had. The other guests enjoyed their meals as well. cool atmosphere and great food. Thank you, from a happy Celiac
Red Cow serves their GF burgers on a GF bun with NO upcharge! They have a dedicated fryer for their fries, so those are GF as well. They have 2 Omission beers and a rotating GF bottle available in addition to several ciders. They don't charge more for those either. Fantastic place for Celiacs!
I had a delicious salad with arugula, quinoa, etc. I wasn't feeling like interrogating the server about the other gf options since the salad sounded safe and I just wasn't feeling like launching into interrogation mode. The salad was safe, filling and tasty. And there were multiple gf beer and cider options to choose from!
