Enjoyed the mahi-mahi taco platter and guacamole. Did not have a gf menu.
Asked the cook to change gloves while making a taco and asked for gluten free. He came out and told me that A. He doesn't wear gloves while assembling tacos and B. Every square inch of the kitchen is contaminated with wheat. He told me that if it's a sensitive "allergy" that he doesn't recommend eating there as everything has wheat in it. We had to leave and went hungry.
I had been apprehensive about eating at Rubio's at first, but when I went in they had the gluten free/allergen list readily available and they were not very busy, so they made accommodations easily. The meal was great, really excited to have another place I can eat tacos.
I love this place so much. I come here whenever I get the chance if I’m in town. My favorite to order and all I’ve ever tried is the Gourmet Shrimp taco plate. I love their chips and salsa as well. Their food tastes so fresh and I’ve never had shrimp tacos anywhere else, but it was recommended to me and ever since I’ve been in love with Rubios! They are under new management I heard as well so the previous review was a year ago. They have made improvements since I think.
This restaurant shouldn't even be on this website as it is not able to accommodate someone who eats GF. No dedicated fryer so no to the chips and also fry the rice so no rice -but even getting this information was difficult as the place is run by kids who have no idea where to look for the information anyway. DO NOT go here and expect safe food!!!
Not sure about the last person's experience on here, but I've never had any trouble here and I eat here regularly. You can also always pull up their allergy menu online in case the cashier isn't helpful. Not a ton of GF choices, but the bowls are great!
if i could give them a lower rating i would... turns out the oil they use for the fryer they use on their grill, rice, and tortillas.. tortillas are stored in the same container as their flour tortillas.. not recommend.. be careful at rubio chains
The food is fantastic and there are a lot of choices. You just have to hound the staff to make sure they change gloves and wipe the surface before preparing. They are clearly not trained, but if you are kind (and don't go during the lunch rush) most of them realize it's really not a big task and are accommodating.
They were very helpful here, and spent some time searching for the book they have that lists allergens. One employee said the only things with gluten here is the flour tortillas and what is made in the fryer. I imagine cc could be an issue but I did not get glutened with my chicken enchilada.
I have eaten at many different Rubio's places the food is mostly fresh made, but at this place in Escondido they are super efficient friendly, the food is hot the Guacamole is the best by far and they are very accommodating with special gluten free offers. Il love going there.
I had the grilled salmon taco dinner (included tortilla chips and refried beans) without cream dressing or cheese. Tacos came with corn tortillas. I also ordered chips and guacamole. I also had several salsas from the salsa bar. I tested the Tortilla chips with my Nima and they tested Gluten Free. However, I still had a gluten reaction after eating here. I have tried several other grilled fish and grilled shrimp tacos here and have gotten glutened here before. I suspect it was either some seasoning on the fish, the salsa bar or cross-contamination. After reading several other reviews on this app where customers also got glutened, it appears that they grill their food on the same grill where they also grill their flour tortillas, so the risk of cross-contamination appears to be quite high. I have not eaten at Rubio's ever without getting sick. I recommend avoiding eating here until they become more conscious of the needs of Celiacs and people who suffer from gluten intolerance. It appears that little to no precautions are made in the food prep to avoid cross-contamination. Disappointing because their food is actually pretty good and relatively affordable. There is one near my work and all the other restaurants are pretty expensive. However, as we all know, the money savings are not worth feeling like crap for several days.
I took my daughter to eat at Rubio's and they were so nice. The Manger Tabitha had made sure she had what she wanted and that it was gluten free. When we went back to get another taco Tabitha helped the lady at the cash register make sure it was gluten free. They didn't have a gluten free menu, but they know what gluten free is and they know what foods are gluten free. This is a celiac friendly place.
We are here in the area on vacation. We stopped by here because I was STARVING and needed to find somewhere I could find something to eat. The allergy menu online was pretty easy to navigate so I chose chicken nachos. My only complaint was that the cheese wasn't completely melted. Otherwise they were tasty and I didn't get sick at all! We would definitely stop by here again!
They do NOT have a gluten free menu or even seemed aware of gf. The clerk called the manager out and he was willing to accommodate us if we told him how. He did know enough about gf to tell us that nothing could be guaranteed no cross contamination.
I didn't feel sick after eating here, I got a steak bowl that was delish! They are pretty aware about gluten intolerances, at least at this location. Pretty good!!
I've only eaten here a few times, it's not my favorite place. But I've been impressed each time with how the employees go out of their way to make sure you're taken care of. They all seem VERY knowledgeable about gluten allergies, and what foods they have available. As well as genuinly concerned about making sure you get what you need. They're also pleasant about it and eager to please, so many places get annoyed when you ask. They do have a gf menu if you ask for it, but you almost don't need to bc they are so well informed. I just wish there was more variety. Everything I have had had been good, just like I said not my personal fav.
I went to 2 different Rubios and had a reaction. i found out that chips, rice, and there corn tacos are notgluten free friendly. they use the same oil from the deep fryer (breaded fish) to fry there chips and their rice. Do not go to rubios. Their corn tortillas are stored in the same container with the flour tortillas
