There is a "gluten-sensitive" menu. Our waiter was knowledgeable and willing to verify with the kitchen on things they weren't familiar with. I dined with others that are not gluten free and they hesitated to put the complimentary bread loaf on the table, which I appreciated but confirmed was okay if it's at the same table as me.
I am also dairy and eggs free and they were able to prepare the meat without butter.
I ordered the gulf coast steak and shrimp - unbasted shrimp per the gluten-sensitive menu's instructions and without butter. I had the side of steamed broccoli with no butter.
The only gluten free alcohol they had was Tito's vodka so I ordered a Moscow mule.
Thankfully no reaction to the food. The shrimp was a little bland (they probably rely on the butter for flavor enhancing) but the steak was well-seasoned!
The kitchen is a shared kitchen and their menu is "gluten-sensitive" so probably not safe for those with celiac.
Googling Saltgrass and finding that there was a gluten-free menu, bread, and a variety of gluten free options, I even checked out other find-me gluten free listings. This restaurant does not live up to that whatsoever. There is no gluten free menu, all the options listed as gluten-free online are not gluten free at this location and the server was not knowledgeable . In fact, she did not even know what gluten even was. She was a fantastic server but there are few gluten free options, nothing is listed on the menu, so you are basically stumbling in the dark on this one.
Went to Saltgrass tonight for a special occasion. It was very disappointing. The GF bread is microwaved, so it was rubbery. We were left sitting for over half an hour and then they tried to deliver our meals even though we hadn't received our salads. Their answer? To bring our salads and leave our meals under the warmer. We refused this, as our medium rare steaks would have been ruined.
When our meals came, my ribeye was MAYBE 1/2" thick and literally had zero seasoning on it. It looked like a Denny's steak. Our server apologized and said they would re-make it. The manager brought my steak out....and it was the SAME STEAK I had sent back! I could tell because I had cut into it in a few spots before. She asked what was wrong and I had to inform her that it was now well-done and still not seasoned. It was only at this point that I was told that their 7 steak seasoning (which we use at home) isn't safe because the kitchen "adds to it".
I couldn't eat more than a few bites because it was so bad. It was a terrible meal and was certainly not worth $30-35 a plate! I cannot recommend this restaurant, unless you want a thin, tasteless steak and rubbery bread. It has really gone downhill.
They had a dedicated gluten free menu with plenty of options. I have a sensitivity, I do not have celiacs.
The newly built Saltgrass restaurant is now open. It has a separate gluten free menu available, and has seafood and salad options for us pescatarians. We already checked it out and had dinner at the bar because it was so busy. The service was great, she knew what celiac was and made sure my food was safe. I didn’t get sick either. I’m glad there’s another option for GF foods in New Braunfels now.
