I walked into Short Stack, said that I had celiac disease, and was literally shown the door. The cashier’s exact words were, “I can’t do celiac,” as she pointed towards the door. She was very clear that the gluten free items on the menu are for folks who are electively gluten free or have only mild intolerances - that they have a small kitchen, flour is always flying everywhere, and they cannot protect against cross-contact. I should note that the restaurant was nearly empty when I went (maybe two other customers at most) and it was nowhere near closing time, so there weren’t any obvious extenuating circumstances.
To be clear, I would much rather they be honest than end up sick. But it was still startling how abrupt they were. Short Stack was one of my favorite places pre-celiac. I am sorry I will not be able to enjoy them going forward.
