We’d been to the Cuban before for a great Sunday Brunch with our older son, a Stevens student, who considers it one of Hoboken’s best. Our younger son, however, has Celiac and is therefore very limited in terms of what and where he can eat. Since it was the younger’s birthday, he originally chose the Hoboken Bare Burger (see my review), where he has had good, celiac safe meals. However, after some research, we (party of 7) found ourselves at The Cuban and are very happy we did! Waiter was very knowledgeable and consulted with chef to be sure our son was safe from gluten. He had the amazing warm yucca rolls, filet mignon, white rice, spinach, black beans and flan for dessert. The waiter even told him which appetizers he could and couldn’t have (octopus yes, but not plantain chips because they were fried with the empanadas). The rest of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals (not necessarily gluten free). Guacamole with plantain chips, beef empanadas, and octopus apps were all great. Seafood paella, grilled hanger steak with garlic shrimp, and the pollo a la parrilla were all excellent, as well. So all in all, a fantastic birthday dinner treat for a teenager with celiac - no reaction to the food at all, besides the blissful “food coma” afterward. Everyone else was very impressed with their meals and service, too. We will definitely be back! Kudos to the Cuban for its conscientious staff and fantastic menu. Note: as is the case with many Hoboken restaurants, tip is automatically included for larger parties.
