I didn't get sick here but their cleanliness practices are abhorrent. Their kitchen is open to the restaurant and I watched a cook pick up raw bacon and put it on the grill, wipe his hands on his apron, pick up toast and put it in the toaster, then scoop up home fries with his hands and put them on the grill. All without gloves. He then wiped his hands on his apron again, scratched his face and used the same hand to pick up the home fries with the help of a spatula to put them on a plate.

Cross contamination is a guarantee. This location has been reported to the health department

It kills me to write this but the Golden Egg is no longer safe for Celiacs. Up until today I've eaten there once a month but today they sat us at the counter and EVERYTHING was cross contaminated. The chef didn't wear gloves and put bread on the griddle and then touched the ham for my omelet. The bacon went next to the bread. Even the gf muffin (which is perfectly safe on its own) was handled by someone who just touched bread. The server understand when I told her but it doesn't seem like any effort is made anymore to fix the problems. I have Celiac and I'm bawling as I write this because the only local place I could get breakfast is now no longer safe.

This place is awesome! A great breakfast place for the whole family. Quite a few gf muffins to choose from and the sausage is gf too. Many gf options. Service is speedy and attentive. Can get very busy on weekends, but worth the wait! I have eaten there many times and never had any food issues. I highly recommend this place.

My favorite breakfast spot!! Always get eggs Benedict on GF English muffin. Amazing!! Wait staff is friendly and knowledgable!! If I could I would go every day!! Just an FYI they get very busy for a small establishment--best to go on a week day that way you're not waiting too long and envious of everyone enjoying their meals!!

My favorite place for breakfast or lunch, even though it is currently hard to get to because of the Sagamore Bridge being under construction. Go through Newcastle or the non-downtown end of Portsmouth to get there.

Great things about the Golden Egg that make me go their more often than any other restaurant? Large portions, simple but excellent food combinations often based on in-season foods, a staff (wait and kitchen) that love and remember their customers. They listen to us, too! I asked how long they microwave the muffins (they are frozen) because they were tough. When they told me one minute, I told them to try 25 seconds because GF breads get tough in the microwave. I've never been served a tough muffin again. Not a dedicated GF kitchen but I have never been sick after eating there.

Parking is not a problem! Don't let the construction deter you!
