My family and I were in the area to visit my brother and his family, and we needed a place that was safe to eat while everyone else ate pizza. We made the trek down to The Mission from Belmont Park and it was so worth it! The people working there were so wonderful and careful, there was a surprisingly extensive gluten free menu, and the food tasted great and was very filling. We now want to travel back down to San Diego just to eat at The Mission again! As always, be sure to ask that the kitchen staff be as careful as possible with your food, and they will be sure to!
gluten free bread for French toast is dipped in same batter as regular French toast. bread has dairy in it. they were knowledgeable.
Food is awesome. Staff is knowledgeable and asked the chef when they weren't 100%. Ask for each item though because some things on the menu are not gf at all and some have cross contamination (French toast).
Food and service is good and a great atmosphere. If you are sensitive you better not eat here. I got sick.
breakfast is the bomb. many gf options and they will make substitutions. don't be in a rush, many times there is a line, this place is popular and worth the wait. every time we forget how good the food and service are.
I ordered a gf/df club and after I was finished the waitress said she forgot that there was milk in the bread. Ugh. It was an ok sandwhich but not worth the raging belly I have now.
Loved my French Toast, Bacon, and Eggs on a rainy morning at Mission Beach. Great service. Great knowledge. Loved it so much that I took a sandwich home too!
Too busy to wash pans, too small to prevent cross contamination. Bread source claimed to be made and processed in same facility that makes wheat breads with no separate ovens. Too many red flags for a celiac's safety. Ok for fad dieter in my opinion.
Loved the Rosemary bread (and blackberry jam). Would have given five stars but they got my order wrong the first time and brought my sandwich with cheese even though I ordered it without. Bread was thickly sliced and made it hard to eat the sandwich with my hands as it started to fall apart so I had to use a fork and knife.
I was very excited to have gfree French toast but then very disappointed to find out that they used the same batter on the regular french toast to dip the gfree French toast... Cooking surface is one thing, but batter filled with regular crumbs is another! I still had some very good chicken apple sausages and rosemary bread that was "just okay". Our server was nice... The atmosphere is nice as well... Just don't show up excited to have french toast! ;)
Great separate gluten free menu with large selection! Everything tastes wonderful! The The french toast is good (beware the French toast may have cross contamination because they use the same mix for both GF and regular bread)
The power Plato was delicious! The rosemary toast was a great replacement for the tortillas. I want to go back for a GF lunch.
They have a huge gluten free menu and offer just about every sandwich on their delicious gluten free bread. The sandwiches are huge so come hungry.
Great selection. Gluten free bread falls apart but it's still delicious!
Very yummy....great choices, unique choices.
good rosemary gf bread, but not impressed with service. our waitress, when asked if they were careful with cross contamination, said, "hope so." not what a severely sensitive Celiac wants to hear. I risked it anyways and had a nice sandwich.
Food was ok, ordered eggs over easy with my meal and scrambled eggs came out, they took those and didn't bring the others for about 15 minutes and I was done eating by then. We both left unimpressed, pretty generic breakfast food.
the food was great! lots of options on the regular menu you can pick from that are naturally gf. gf menu was great, wish their granola they make in house had the option of being gf.
Excellent food and atmosphere! I had a chorizo dish with gluten free rosemary bread, and it was soft and moist! There was also French toast on the menu. The GF menu does say gluten sensitive, however. I have CD, and have had no issues with any of the food here.
They were just ok and luckily I didn’t get sick. I told the waiter I had celiac and his attitude was like “uh huh ok...so what’s your order?” Not very attentive. They have a gluten free menu but there’s a risk of cross contamination. I only ate here once. I wouldn’t recommend it. The food was also just ok. Nothing to write home to mom about
Food was okay. Wish we had gone elsewhere. Ordered two GF dishes so my wife and I could split and I could try both, but the GF french toast wasn’t really GF. They put the GF bread in the same batter as the gluten bread when making it so it is not truly gluten free. However, she said it was pretty bland. The chilaquiles were good. Nothing spectacular. A little spicy, which I like, just unexpected. They didn’t warn of cross contamination for that dish, hopefully I won’t get sick!
Gluten-free friendly, but not celiac friendly. Same cutting surfaces and grill. I appreciate that the gluten free menu states the kitchen is not gluten free. Upon further questions I'm not comfortable that the handling of food is a safe for someone with celiac. if only gluten intolerant, it's probably just fine.
We stopped in on a busy Saturday morning, before heading to the zoo. Got seated right away and service was pretty quick. The food was amazing, my 8 year old took one bite of the rosemary potatoes and asked to come back everyday on this vacation. The homemade gf rosemary bread was amazing. I am super sensitive and had no problems at all. They have a gf menu and make their own breads every morning, and lots of options. Highly recommended and we will be back!!
Considering cooking surfaces are intermingled, how is one lucky enough to get food not cross contacted by a gluten containing food or ingredient? If you're celiac this is a mine field. If you just go gf as part of the "fad diet" you'll not notice the contaminants. I would give no stars but the review will not be posted without at least one star. Thus you see one star.
Ordered directly off a gluten free (separate) menu and when my order came egg croissant and separate French toast dish I asked the waiter if the French toast was gluten free and he said no, taking it away to fix it he didn't bother to mention the croissant I was already picking up to eat wasn't either. Halfway through I thought there was no way it was, after asking, of course it wasn't. I will be severely sick tonight on my vacation from this. Why have a separate allergen menu if it means nothing to anyone who works here???
I usually get the Rosemary off the GF menu, with eggs over hard instead of scrambled. The rosemary potatoes are really good, and always have lots of crispy bits. The GF rosemary bread is phenomenal!!!! There is a gf french toast option, which I haven't yet tried, but I wish you could get gf pancakes here!
Tasty food, not Celiac friendly. GF bread not toasted separately. They were really kind, and brought me untoasted out of a fresh bag, but without toasting was so dry. No kids menu. Very limited choices for celiac- quite certain you can't avoid cross contamination.
I was happy to see they had a gluten free menu but there is risk for cross contamination. The manager said he wasn't familiar with Celiac but took time to listen to our needs. He made a special plate for my son and used new utensils and pans in the kitchen to avoid any contamination.
Amazing! I love this place! The rosemary potatoes are OFF THE HOOK good and the GF rosemary bread with blackberry jam... I over-ate here more than once because it was just so good. Scrambled eggs are fluffy and need no ketchup - so yum. Try an iced Thai coffee if you're looking for a drink - yum!
I had the gluten free French toast and it was wonderful! They did inform me upon ordering that the homemade gf bread would be dipped in the same batter as the regular bread but that worked for me as I do not have celiacs. They offer a seperate gf menu and the staff is very friendly and helpful
Honestly, I wasn't overly impressed with the Mission for what it was hyped up to be. Although everything on the menu looked good - I wasn't overly impressed with their sandwiches that we got. I also noticed that the bread was toasted (only after I had eaten a part of it) and I'm really wondering where they toast it??). They waiter seemed rushed to understand my gluten allergy (even though they were super busy). The bread was way too thick and didn't hold up (go figure, it's gluten-free!!). I guess I could have ordered breakfast before really judging the place, but to have to wait SO long to get it, it might just be easier eating gluten-free breakfast on my own!
Had the turkey sandwich on homemade rosemary GF bread! Bread was soft and thick, it fell apart a bit, but it was worth it to not have a sandwich on toast! Oh and have their coffee! They use local San Diego roaster Cafe moto! BEST COFFEE!!!! :) next time I'm have breakfast, my mom got the sweet tamales that were GF and vegetarian. We will be back!
The turkey sandwich with gkuten free rosemary bread was a large sized sandwich and icluded fresh tomatoes and lettuce. Separately they serve a salad included and everything tasted really good as was fresh. We did our sandwiches as take away and called ahead to pick up on our way to the San Diego Int'l Airport since the airport does not offer gluten free options. I will go back again!! If you go to eat inside on a Sunday morning for brunch or lunch, give yourself plenty of time. Not much else available in the area and the food is good.
