Sorry to be posting this - angry too - Southwold Pier fish and chips are no longer serving gluten free options. They have just “ changed direction “ and are not serving gluten free or children’s portions. Four of us in our family party are gluten intolerant or coeliac and when we ordered were told they no longer offer the option. My granddaughter was in tears - our go-to chippy in Southwold has deserted the cause!
Phoned ahead and was told I could have gluten free batter. Ordered was told it was fine and then came back from the kitchen to say the batter was contaminated and could only have pan fried. Very disappointed after driving an hour for batter.
A real shame as had always been so good before
The gluten free options are limited but done very well! We ordered two Gluten Free fish and chips and were told it would take a bit longer to cook those. The staff was very knowledgeable and clear about what was safe and what was not. They also have Gluten Free Vinegar! (The curry sauce is not safe because of cross contamination)
Visited the pier fish and chips shop on Easter Saturday, and as expected it was very busy.
They do gluten free every day which is great, and the order is prepared fresh and cooked completely separately, which is great. Takes around 13 minutes to be cooked. They also have gluten free vinegar under the counter if you ask for it.
I don't know if it's because it's early in the season, or they've changed the menu, but all that was available to us was cod and/or chips. I've read previous reviews where there seemed to be far more of a selection.
I asked about mushy peas, but where they are kept warm is right underneath the tray where they put the cooked fish, and lots of scraps fall down, so I was reassured they knew their stuff regarding cross contamination.
All in all nice food but limited choice. Quite expensive, and a long wait.
