I have celiac disease and I absolutely LOVED everything. They have gluten free sauces, the meat and rice are automatically gluten free, everything is clearly marked! It made it easy and I wasn’t worried about cross contamination whatsoever. It’s also a nice atmosphere! If you’re in the area, check them out!
We went as a special treat. My daughter and I. Have not had trouble in the past. I am not sure if they didnt put allergy on the order or not. But the person who made my sushi didn't change her gloves and plated my daughter non gf sushi on the same plate! They did however give me gf soy sauce. I will not be back!!!!
GF markers right on the standard menu, and they are trained to ask whether this is "allergy or preference". If you say allergy, they will use fresh gloves and utensils. GF soy sauce available as well.
GF sauces are now labelled right on the menu! They will gladly change gloves, too!
I really felt like the staff at this location had my back. They went out of their way to make sure everything I ordered really was safe, and I didn't get sick. Just make sure you tell them you have an allergy. There are so many delicious gluten free combinations if you build your own bowl, as well as some other menu options. Highly recommend for celiacs.
Tokyo Joe's claims on it's website that staff are trained for allergen issues and know how to avoid cross contamination. This being said, it's hit or miss on getting sick here. One order was fabulous, carefully prepared and labeled. The next order we watched the guy switch the lid from a regular teriyaki sauce label to a gluten free label. Thinking perhaps he had used the wrong lid at first, we didn't say anything. Big mistake! He obviously filled it with regular sauce, then looked at the order and just slapped a gluten free label on it. I just don't trust them anymore at this location. The one across town has always asked about allergen issues and makes sure to clarify any questions they have with our order. Go to the Shields store instead of the Troutman to be Celiac safe.
The gf sauces are good with the rice bowls. They seem knowledgable about contamination issues too. I think their seats are weird, so I order to-go.
I went in to Tokyo Joe's for the first time yesterday...never have eaten at any of them before, therefore I did not know much about the menu. Anyhow, I decided to get 'Joes Noddle Bowl'. I was asked by the very nice (male) server what size I would like as he took my order. He directed my attention to the different size of bowls. I noticed the smallest bowl and ask about that size, when he informed me that was the kid's size. All of a sudden a gal (with blonde hair) who was taking or putting money in a register that the kid's size bowls were only for 12 yrs or under. She snapped this info out at me....like I was some sort of moron for even asking about that different sizes. I felt she was very disrespectful to me and about what the young man was trying to explain to me..and she really didn't need to butt in. The regular size bowl is so LARGE..I had to take some home with me. If I could've ordered the smallest size bowl I would've also had ordered some sushi, which I really wanted to try. Since I was well over 12 yrs. old and the gal-server informed me very rudely that I was not allowed to order that size...I didn't order any sushi. Toyko Joe's lost money on my order...because of the gal server's rudeness to me. Anyhow, I ordered the regular size bowl-no sushi and enjoyed my food that was good. However, I can tell you that it will be a long time before I go back to Tokyo Joe's mainly because of how the gal staff member acted toward me. If/when I go back...hopefully she would've found somewhere else to work, so I can go back to Toyko Joe's to enjoy some more of the good food. I wish I knew her name...so I could call up the manager and inform the manager about how she treated me.
Great place to eat gf! They have just added an additional gf sauce green curry bringing the total up to 3. Just tell the cashier that you have a gluten allergy and the kitchen will wash hands, change gloves, get a new knife and a new cutting board. Tokyo Joes rocks!
I was actually quite impressed with the food here and the fact that it is safe to eat if you have a gluten allergy or even if you are celiac. I’ve spoken to the manager before, and they told me that they take the necessary precaution with gluten to prevent any cross-contamination.
