I used to love this place! I came all the time when I lived nearby. I grabbed dinner when visiting the area today, my standard 2 beef barbacoa tacos and sharing chips and guac with my partner. I asked if the fryer was still dedicated gluten free and was told yes. And well, the food was excellent as always but a few hours later, I’m having a lot of stomach pain. Without getting into too much detail, I feel very sick. And I don’t know. Maybe it was just the food. I rarely eat beef. But this used to be my go to order and was never a problem before. So, maybe it was cross contamination. I’m really not sure. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Update September 2024: no longer dedicated GF. They assured me it would be safe with no CC, but I got nervous while we were waiting for our food and decided to check updated reviews here. Saw new reviews that mentioned people getting sick, and I decided that I just couldn't risk it. Too late to cancel my order, so my husband will eat it. Very disappointing.
It was so nice to be able to order anything and not worry about it, because everything is gluten free! The food was great! It's the kind of place where you order & pay at the counter and they bring the food to you, do don't expect full sit down service.
Many gluten free options, portions. Not too spicy, but with spicy sauces available for your discretion. Friendly staff and fast service.
You can use Toast to order: https://www.toasttab.com/toro-loco-mexican-street-food-22-raymond-rd/v3/ They have extensive options to customize each dish, Allergy buttons, and a “Gluten Allergy” option - so you can write special instructions. And you can even choose curbside pickup!
UPDATE: 2024 no longer safe!! I got a burrito bowl before a concert without checking the updated reviews this winter and then got sick. Thought it was the dairy but nope, they’ve introduced gluten to the kitchen and cross contamination. If you’re celiac do not go unless the kitchen goes back to being completely free of gluten.
Originally review: Very safe! Had the burrito. It’s great west hartford has a dedicated gluten free restaurant.
We stopped here on the drive from NJ to Maine each direction. The staff very knowledgeable and follow gluten free protocols for all. The only gluten containing item is the burrito wrap which they have an equivalent GF version. You wouldn’t even tell it’s gluten free. The churros were amazing. Highly recommend as I’m a sensitive celiac along with 2 kids. We all ordered different things and no issues of contamination. Even their hot sauce is gluten free and safe! The entire menu can be gluten free so there is no need for a separate menu here.
Update Feb 2024: the gluten is back! Flour tortillas for burritos cooked on same surface as GF burritos. We had no problems with tacos, cheese quesadilla, and french fries, but SO bummed they are no longer 100% GF.
We ate here in Dec. 2023 and talked with them in detail. The gluten buns (see some other reviews) are a thing of the past. The kitchen is back to being 100% gluten free.
We like the food here. They have kids options and some vegetarian options. We've had a few special requests in the past that they always accommodate.
They also make a mean mezcal margarita.
It's awesome for the family to enjoy a place and everything on the menu without worries.
Seating is limited, especially in indoors but is a nice casual place.
UPDATE: NO LONGER GF SAFE
Just ate there and was assured there was a gf fryer and "concerns" about cross contamination. That didn't sound right so I tested the gf burrito and Nima says it has gluten. I'd already eaten some and now am sick. So sad bc I loved this place before they moved.
Old review:
500 stars!!!! This was the most amazing meal I've had all year. Everything on the menu is gf. Lots i choose from, tons of flavor.
Called to ask if they were back to being 100% GF and the girl on the phone said no, they still have regular gluten buns in house. But use protocols to ensure no cross contamination apparently. Still wary to eat here again, used to eat here weekly until they decided to put regular buns on their menu.
Oh no! Updated 5/14/23 * We had dinner after sports this evening. We’ve eaten here at least a dozen times since our original visit. It was always fine. Tonight, two hours after eating my son became very sick. Classic gluten symptoms for him. Another recent review by another user seems to indicate cross contact. He hadn’t eaten anything else all day that could possibly pose a risk. This is so very upsetting for us. I did call and let them know. The manager wrote down what he ate and said she would be speaking with her manager asap. We will give it a couple months before we return*
We have eaten here three times. We’ve had tacos, empanadas, hamburgers, guacamole, French fries, chips, corn dogs and a few desserts. All three times the food was fabulous and enjoyed by everyone. It’s a takeout style restaurant with about three indoor tables and maybe six picnic tables out front.
This place was great, food is excellent. However they advertise as being a 100% gluten free kitchen which is extremely concerning as they offer regular buns for sandwiches. CC is definitely possible. You can't say you have a fully gluten free kitchen but not have one. Please get rid of the buns or stop saying you are fully gluten free. It's very misleading.
I've eaten here so many times in the last couple years since it opened and this had become my new favorite restaurant! I never had an issue until the last 2 times I got violently ill within 20 minutes of eating. I thought I was having a reaction to some other unknown food until I saw the other reviews on here. Both times I had the fish and shrimp taco, I had never tried these before so maybe they were always unsafe? Hopefully they can figure out what it is so that people stop getting sick. I called and let them know I got sick and they assured me everything is gluten free. I also noticed they changed their corn tortillas recently.
Confused because they say it’s dedicated gluten free but I got sick a couple hours after eating there. I got the crispy shrimp…we called just to make sure that it was definitely gluten free and they confirmed.
Crispy Shrimp tacos were great so were the empanadas. They were both must haves. Service was friendly and quick. We plan on coming back next time we’re in town.
We love this place! Entire menu is GF. Great tacos! Love the fish, pork, and gringa tacos!
Our server was so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. I cannot wait to return to Avon just so we can go back.
Just finished devouring my first takeout order from Toro Loco Mexican Street... delicious. I had heard good things, so I ordered a variety of small bites and a couple of tacos. The street corn esquites, empanadas, and molotes were all fantastic... and the beef barbacoa taco was BOMB. So. Good. Margaritas were tasty, too. I was able to confirm at pickup that everything was totally gluten-free, and the staff were super-friendly. Can't wait to go back!
